First impression of WA3

Hello!

Just downloaded WA3 (beta 1; love build #448), and my first impression is: it's slow. Slower than Winamp 2.x.

I have a suspicion the slowness is caused because you're using your own UI implementation on top of Windows' GUI (your stuff on top of an already bad thing... hmmmm...). Netscape 6.x has the same slowness problem. Since you're sticking with Windoze (i.e. you don't have Winamp for other OSs), I suggest using Windoze's API for GUIs. Most ppl's boxes already have enough weight to drag around just by running Windoze, and you're adding to that. Don't go head over hills on the GUI, concentrate on the main function of the program: audio playback.

Oh, yeah, and what's up with the new playlist format? I tried my existing PLS files, but they worked only with files located on my HD, did *not* work with the files on my CD-Rs. Stop reinventing the bicycle, guys. PLS and M3U is just fine by me.

Oh, and one more thing: please don't turn Winamp into a multi-purpose blender, food processor and stapler. Let it be what it is: a great audio player. If people want databases of their files, ShoutCast browsers, e.t.c., allow them to download them as plug-ins.

My overall opinion: so far I would NOT recommend upgrading to 3.x, but then I've ony seen the early beta, so time will tell...

The only thing I liked so far is the new default skin.

that IS an option. winamp 3 is modular, and if you only want the player and the playlist, that is an option.

I'd like to meet a mad man who makes it all seem sane
To work out all these troubles and what there is to gain

Too Slow...

Yes beta3 is too slow and more complex than 2x.Skin technology is better than 2x.But ý think there is so much things which is unnecessary.

The WA3 beta was released so people could start working on plugins and skins for WA3. If you think it's too slow, too big, etc etc etc then go back to WA2 cuz WA3 is not finished yet. 'nuff said
