My First Skin, is it any good?
My first effort. Please be gentle... I could use some good feedback. I used PSP and the template skin. I based the original on the Nemish skin, because I like the clarity of that skin. I don't think you'll be able to tell that it was based on Nemish.
I've already submitted it, but any feedback would be nice. |

Not too bad for a 1st skin, but everything could blend in a bit better with a little more effort.

I withdrew it from the submission, so hopefully it won't get published right away. I'm acting on your thoughts, though I'll admit I'm not skilled enough to match it up the way I'd like without help. I found a skinner program that'll match up the backgrounds for the main window (W.Skinner 2.0), but I'll have to redo quite a bit once that's done. Is there a similar program that'll match up the Equalizer? Maybe I'm missing something in the program I downloaded, but it seems to only do the main window.
The skinner programs I've looked at all seem to be very basic starter programs. They don't do enough of the detail to be more than that. I've got some new inspiration thanks to finding and reading these boards. BTW, if anyone feels the need to download the "beta" version, try http://www.eskimo.com/~tegan/aqua/Aquaman.wsz and let me know, if you do, what you think of it. |

sometimes the only way to do something right is to do it yourself... and a lot of people frown on skinner programs....
[my opinion] i dont like how you've used the same symbol for the minimise and winshade and close buttons.... though other than that its pretty nice ![]() ![]() [/my opinion]

Thanks for the tip, Ch33zels. I'm thinking of possibilities... it's amazing how just a few words can inspire the imagination!

This is a great skin. You have obviously put a lot of work into this. I do agree that this could be better if you wanted it to, but I think you would get a lot of downloads with what you currently have.
If you want to improve this skin, the best bet would be to draw out the main.bmp with all the element and then use a skinner to split it up to the component parts without adding any effects. Then you can go back and do the pressed states, etc. I'm sure there are many more skinners out there which do all the major windows, and I'm sure a quick search on google for +"skinner" +"winamp" will do the trick. Feel free to ask for more advice as you progress through this project and have fun

Watch out in W.Skinner 2.0, when u choose the right colour for your visualization, its turns out a shade brighter/darker ( i forget which) than what you set it to. I found this out once, so just make sure the vis matches the background.

Thank you skinme! and PeaceMaker. I'm getting some great ideas from reading other threads in the forum. Gonna lurk for awhile and work on the skin. Again, thank you to everyone who responded.

Some words can definitely un-inspire a person...
but I was expecting that reaction, so it doesn't bother me. I'm quite gratified by the positive reactions I *did* get...

Ah, I just figured it meant I'd finally arrived... you've never really become part of a community until you've been flamed.
Here's the latest version, continuing to work on it. Lots of the changes are fairly subtle, but I think it looks a little better now. I'm still working on Ch33zels' suggestion, but I'm not entirely sure what to use besides the Aquaman symbol. Perhaps the seashells from the Equalizer will move to the titlebar when I figure out how to replace *them*. |
