"Associate with Audio CD"...?

I'm running Windows ME, PIII 900MHz, 192MB

"Associate with Audio CD's" unchecks itself everytime I reboot so Audio CDs play with Windows Media Player 7 until I recheck it despite the file type ,cda remaining a Winamp file type...! Yes - I am running agent with keep file types checked...

Q1: How can I fix this? (I've read all the related posts I can find) Is it a windows startup thing that need editing...?

Q2: I can't see how the hell you can uninstall Media Player 7 from Windows ME. Unchecking from windows setup removes the old version player and Media Player 7 doesn't show up in Add/remove programs list and doesn't have an uninstall file in it's program folder....How can this be uninstalled...?

I know both these topics have been covered many times but I can't seem to find the answers!

Please help

1. Go to your winamp folder, and make sure that the winamp.ini file is not set to read-only.

2. You don't have to uninstall WMP, just disassociate it from your mp3s. Start up media player, go to tools -> options -> formats and uncheck the file types that you don't want it associated with.

Thanks for reply...but...

Checked winamp.ini - it's not set to read only, even deleted it and so recreated it. Media player is NOT set to play audio cd's or mp3...still got this problem.

Anything else I can try...?

Uninstall WMP. It's more or less useless anyway.

I only run into maybe 1 out of 100 online videos that actually "need" WMP7 to play.

I also noticed that CD audio association won't work if the CDPlayer component that comed with windows isn't installed...

Yes, you hit the nail on the head there my friend

The links which sawg provided give all the answers.

WMP7+ doesn't use the same mci drivers that all other players use.

Sorry to p*ss on everyone's fireworks but I'v tried everything suggested in the threads above but on reboot windowsME rewrites the following in the AudioCD "play" dialogue "application used to perform action:"

C:\WINDOWS\cdplayer.exe /play

If I uncheck "associate with audio CD" box in winamp without reboot then the above dialogue appears. When I check "associate with audio CD" the everything is fine with the following dialogue written:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" %1

BUT THIS IS OVERWRITTEN ON REBOOT!

I have tried amending this line as the threads suggest and it works a treat until reboot!

Am I going mad...?
