This would be a good idea except
that there allot of people with 56k dial-up access here.
Theyr'e already slowed down by sigs and avatars that are animated
and by allot of large .jpg and .gif images that ocassionally make
their way here.
Adding flash files and activex would further slow down their times,
/me thinks.

Flash has become really overused for certain things.

I've gone so far as to not install flash in K-Meleon since all flash really does is bloat...

What purpose would flash or shockwave really serve here?

None. It would just add bloat to an already slow site. I'm on dialup (which hardly ever reaches 56k ) and if loads of bloody moving graphics were added to try and make it look fancy then I wouldn't come back.

Either that or we should have an alt.fan.winamp newsgroup or something like that to use instead...

Flash is a nightmare on 56K - especially when the site you're trying to view tells you to download the latest version, only to use it for a crummy intro. I don't think I could use

www.rockstargames.com/grandtheftauto3

on 56K and retain my sanity, as the site is composed entirely using shockwave. Thank goodness for my (current) faster connection

On the website I administer, when people ask for "improvements" by the brand name of the technology rather than the nature of the content, I usually go to their house and spray paint a huge-ass STFU!!! at their porch.

Another point to consider

I'm not sure why no one has brought this up. But macromedia is a bitch that requires proprietary plugins. Not only does that slow load time but the proper plugins aren't even available for certain platforms and browsers. That would kill cross-compatability pretty quickly.

/me ponders reviving the idea of a forum news reader...

now that I think about it, it would be kinda nice to be able to browse the forums without opening up a web browser.

I like those news stories. They're fun to read. Anyhow, the Winamp Site is good as it is.

A forum like this is far easier to administer than a Newsgroup, and you have far more customisability too.

I understand that it's far more customizable and there is actually some way of administering the posts and everything.

It's just I prefer newsgroups - much quicker to navigate; just have agent download all the messages, and then peruse them at leisure.

And don't forget the pr0n!

Sorry - am I being too cynical?

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty

I think you're missing the point of these forums. Correct me if I'm wrong but the whole purpose of these forums is discussion of whatever you decide to pull out of your ass.

Since I'm on crappy 33,6k dialup sadly I don't have the bandwidth needed for downloading of pron from newsgroups.

Not that I've tried. erm.
