winamp 2.78 does not play MIDIs
when trying to play midis in the latest winamp, the player plays but no sound is produced. I have incorporated the MID and MIDI file types in winamp but there is still no sound. Is there a way to fix this and how?

Make sure you have the Standard or Full versions
Update the MIDI Plug: http://www.blorp.com/~peter/zips/in_midi.exe Give more DETAILS if neither work, including full system specs. |

I am having the same problem. After updating to the latest version of Winamp I can't play the Midi files (all others are ok). I have installed the suggested update but it still won't work.
Win Me/Pentium 3/866 Mhz/ 128Meg Ram/ AC97 sound card. I have done nothing to the system other than download the latest Winamp version. (It worked up to then). I can get them to play by selecting the Microsoft GS wavetable but winamp crashes on completion of playback and reverts to the midi out/ midi mapper setting (which doesn't work). Help! |

Did you RTFM? (see Peter's post above)
You might want to try looking for some updated sound drivers. btw, AC97 is an onboard integrated sound chip, it's not a proper soundcard. Make sure the following line exists in your system.ini file [drivers] midi=mmsystem.dll If it wasn't there, add it, then reboot. If all else fails, it's definitely a sound drivers related issue. You say the MIDI Out / MIDI Mapper "doesn't work" Can you please expand on the term "doesn't work"? Does it look like it's playing but you hear no audio? Or does nothing happen at all? (no timer or seekbar progress) Any error messages? Did you try changing to "immediate mode"? MIDI plugin -> config -> misc tab -> midiOut mode Did you try resetting "MIDI Out Volume"? (Device tab) Have you made sure the MIDI slider is up high enough and not muted in Windows Volume Control ? |

The file runs but there is no sound. The name and length shows and counts down.
I tried the RTFM but it won't open. I can't find a sound card name only "AC97 Sound Card" in control panel etc. I have tried all the possible outputs - Midi Mapper gives a system error "already in use" (it's not) as does midi mapper mcl. Ac97 works (there is sound) but it crashes Winamp at the end of the music. MPU 41 does the same. Microsoft Synthesiser works but microsoft GS wavetable also brings a system error. System.ini is fine and your other suggestions don't seem to help or are ok. Everything was fine until I downloaded the latest version. I have tried reinstalling both the latest and previous versions but they do the same. I have also lost midi capability in my Evolution program - it says the files are in use elsewhere. I have not done anything to the system other than download the latest version and the patch and I have scanned for a virus with no result. I can't figure it out - I have not deleted anything and used the uninstall before the reinstallation. Thanks for your time.

Ok. I am posting this reply to myself in case other can make use of it. I tried everything I could think of to get my Midi tunes to play including everything in the earlier reply.
In desperation I turned to a program called Tweak UI which does loads of clever things when your PC decides to go awry on you. I used the "repair" facility to repair system files (it compares the present system files to the ones in the Sysbackup folder). The Midi files now play fine. I can only presume that somrthing in the new Winamp download was not compatible with my PC and rewrote a system file it couldn't cope with or there was damaged file it reguired. (Widows Media player won't play the sound though but then again it never has. Perhaps there's a clue in there!!!).

Yes, tweakUI rocks!
However, I can assure you that your problem was NOT caused by installing Winamp, because ALL of Winamp's files go in the Winamp dir. It doesn't install anything in the Windows\System dir (with the one exception of support for WMA files in the Full version . . . but that is an absolute necessity, and does not affect MIDI playback or any other formats except for WMA) |
