Philips says copy-protected CDs have no future
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99991783
I like the idea that someone's standing up against the RIAA and saying "f*&$ you!" Discuss eh, heh. |

Philips have got it spot on, CD Protection is the bane of my life as I'm a CD Pirate, but this is about the non-pirate users, and I know enough people who can't use programs they've gone out and bought with their hard-earned cash... and as Philips said, they are easy to get around once you know how, but most people don't and this can cause them large problems...

I doly do love Philips also
![]() When I went to an expo at the OM World Finals ( ) They gave me tons of free stuff, propaganda, and innuendoes. It's hilarious how ironic it is though. RIAA thinks they're do high and mighty and try to put all this bullshit on, but then Philips comes in and says "we own the patents, clownboat!" God I love them eh, heh. |

the issue is, as much money as these companies spend on trying to stop people copying things, there is always someone out there more smarter than them.
Call it social engineering, call it whatever you want. there are people out there who find it ethically reasonable to copy things. Companies need to stop flushing their money away trying to prevent people from copying things and either keep that money to keep their profits up, or alternatively, invest it trying to find out why people feel that they would prefer to copy things than buy them new. I have been preaching this for years, and eventually, someone will come along with some authority and repeat exactly what i have been saying. cept they'll get a whole lot of recognition for it. go figure. |

The RIAA has alot of problems. They think everyone steals by nature. Don't know bout every 1 else, but I only steal from Walgreens on occasion, and researching why people steal music is dumb. I know why I do it. If its free and takes no effort and I won't get caught I must be a fuckin ape wit a bananna up my ass to not do it. I still believe music is made 2 give an individual a voice, not to make profits so super-models will fuck his ugly ass. Why does it matter ne wayz? Not like artists make any money from selling cd's. The RIAA is just throwin a bitch fit cuz they can't rip ne 1 off ne more. Personally I'm surprised at how slow everyone caught on to trading music over the net. This shits been goin on since fuckin 94. Personally I think the RIAA just needs a nice fuck an a cig an they'll shut the fuck up. Heh still funny how phillips socked them in a jaw like a lil bitch. But we all know phillips is doing it for sells too. With out the ability to steal music, movies, porn, games, and apps they couldn't sell their burners, or their crappy blank cds.

RIAA and SIAE !
I think that RIAA and SIAE (ITALY) exchange bullballs for lightbulbs,
what i mean is that until they make us pay more than 20 Euro's for a new cd they won't get rid of piracy. The prices are to high and they suck about over 30 percent of the total cost, the worst thing about it is that the artist's only get the lowest piece of the cake (and pay the studio, session men and so on )so what i say is VAFFANCULO .... RIAA and SIAE !

i think if you like the music, you should be honest, and go buy it. it's only fair--people are in this for money, people need to put food on the table.
getting rid of every source of piracy wont help, if they elliminated irc, and the napster clones, or maybe even shoutcast, it wouldn't do a thing. they'd lose me as a consumer. i've bought many albums because i heard it first from downloading it from irc, or hearing it on monkey radio (brennan = god) or digitally imported. its unfair to the consumer. if we buy the cd, we have the right to be able to listen to it in any way we like. be it in a cd player, mp3 player, diskman, or on the computer. I'd like to meet a mad man who makes it all seem sane To work out all these troubles and what there is to gain |

I'm with you ice- i didnt own a SINGLE cd untill i downloaded stuff from napster. then napster when bye-bye
'a common mistake that people make when trying to design smething completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools' -Douglas Adams the same works for sharing clients and anti-piracy soft/hardware. all it does is extend the amount of time it takes for people to break the locks. thats the way people are. give them a challenge and they succeed. sorry, but they WILL be broken, so why bother pissing off all of the regular customers by making them buy new cd players just so they can listen to the d that wouldnt work on their old player. btw- what stopes people from playing cds on a player that plays them and just pluging the output on the player in the line in on their computer and recording from there? (was this said before? if it was, sorry for repeating it!) |

Well, if you have an optical out on your stereo and an optical in on your card. . .

i'm sure someone will find a way to hack the soundcard and cdplayer to get perfect digital copies. (ie, get in before the DA converter on the cd player and hook it into the soundcard after the AD converter.
missyob made me post this. |

Actually, the way CD copy-protection works is that they change the start sector of the first track and so on by something like -3712 frames (I have no idea)or something like that. The result is that it freezes up all computers when you try to play or rip the CD. The majority of stereos are unaffected.
But, using AudioGrabber, you can change what it recognizes as the start of a track, and get it to rip properly. Sure, it has n secure ripping mode, but buffered burst from the CD-ROM is better than using even an optical line-in on a soundcard. |
