Computer help needed Please!

Hi all. I installed a new hard drive today (I now have 40g Yea!). Anyway, I backed up all my music and I am attempting to put it back on my computer. The only problem is that my computer is not recognizing mp3 files. I can play them using winamp, but the .mp3 at the end of all the files is gone, and mediaplayer keeps triing to override winamp.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

~ Missy

Use the options in winamp to associate it with every file type then make it maintain file associations with that option in the Preferances screen. Then...erm i dunno it's late.

You could also do it the hard way and go into windows explorer, then in Folder Options, select the file types tab and change it there.

Sounds like "hide common file extensions" might be checked in Windows Explorer's folder options. As to why WMP is being proprietary with the files ... dunno . Try what the others here have suggested and you should be ok.

Open Windows Explorer.

Click: Tools -> Folder Options

On the new menu, click the "View" tab

Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"

Now you should be able to see the ".mp3" at the end of the files.

rant and george are dead on on why you cant see the extentions. after a nice fresh install one of the first things i do is

double click my computer
at the top of the box click on view
then folder options
then the view tab
then i put a check in show all files, a check in show file path in the title bar, and uncheck!! hide file extentions. then apply and ok

as far as windows media player being invasive and grabbing associations, its nasty that way. eaisly fixed if you reinstall winamp, and choose not to use the previous installed copys settings.

Isn't it under:
-Tools -> Folder Options? It is on mine.

BigStarPlaya: Depends on your Windows version.

Missy: I'm guessing you're not quite as geektastic as most of those who post here.. That may or may not be a good thing.
