Digital MP3 output from SPDIF output

I have a receiver that will decode MP3 audio streams, and I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to output the original MP3 stream out of a SPDIF port. Currently my sound card converts the audio to Pulse Code Modualtion (PCM) which my receiver decodes. Since I currently use the SPDIf port to output a 5.1 Dolby digital signal and a 5.1 DTS signal, it should be possible to output a MP3 stream.

I have heard of a device that used the USB to perform this task, but I don't want to go that route.

I have exactly the same problem. I have an Amp that has an internal MP3 decoder, and would like to pass it raw MP3 data from the SPDIF out on my Audigy. DVD software such as PowerDVD has SPDIF bypass option which spits raw Dolby digital out the spdif, so it must be possible for MP3 data. Winamprocker, you _may_ be correct that the PC can decode the stream better, but whats the point of having functionality if you cant use it! If anyone has any ideas whether a plugin to achieve this is possible, please speak up.

I doubt very much that an mp3 stream alone would be sufficient. You'll also need a clock signal outputted by the computer to regulate the mp3 decoder chip in your amp (more than likely an MAS3507D).

I would like to accomplish the same thing.

Harman Kardon has a device called the DAL 150 which connects via USB or Serial to the computer, then connects to the A/V receiver, essentially just handing off the mp3 to the receiver. Only caveat there, Windows Media Player must be used. ugh!

ethan_h: Would the DAL 150 in this situation be providing clock to the receiver?
