Winamp causes XP to shutdown incorrectly

Hi,

I have been experiencing a problem that I thought was unique to my setup until I asked a friend of mine and he told me he's have a similar problem.

When I use Winamp, Windows XP Professional will not turn off or hibernate. Upon trying to initiate these shutdown actions, my system will hang. This problem happens even if I just start Winamp, do not play any files, close it, and then attempt to shutdown. If I do not open Winamp, WinXP will shutdown or hibernate normally.

I'm running Winamp 2.78 & DFX 5.0 on XP Pro on a P2-400 Compaq machine with 320 MB RAM and an onboard ESS Masetro2 AudioDrive. I have tried turning DFX off (but not uninstalling it...hmm....) and the results are the same.

Needless to say, I'm stumped. Winamp and Windows worked excellently together before I upgraded from Windows 98 to XP.

Any possible solutions would be helpful. I've been using Windows Media Player for now and that works fine. In fact, Netscape seems to crash much more in XP than it did in 98. I wonder what other AOL Time Warner products experience more problems in Microsoft's new operating?

Sounds like a bad third party plug-in to me. Remove any third party plug-ins and completely uninstall and reinstall Winamp.

you might want to update your driver's too

the plug-in might be exploiting a driver problem

p.s the drivers that come with windows XP are shithouse

Thanks for all the advice. After removing all 3rd party plugins and re-installing Winamp, I'm experiencing no problems with XP anymore.

As for the plugins, I've re-installed DFX 5.0 and I have no problems. I also installed Album List v1.36 and it works fine also. The only one I did not re-install was a plug-in that controlled the multimedia buttons on an old keyboard that I no longer use, so I suspect that this is what was casuing the problem.
