PHP hosting for free

I am was just thinking that people are short on free PHP hosting lately and if you want some I would be willing to offer it to Winamp Lovers only. Being that I am a fan of the community.

Anyways if you need PHP or CGI-Bin Hosting (C++, TCL, Pythong, or Perl) and can't find it for free feel free to talk to me. I would REALLY like to host someone who wants to create a website that contains Winamp content more than any.

At max I will host about 5 people. All with 20 megs a piece. It is ad free hosting as well and you get FTP. Now this sounds too good to be true huh? Well remember this is a special offer for winamp lovers only. Also you get a sub domain which would be "something.drakesland.com"

If you are at all interested reply to this post or email me.

Well here is the deal... The less people that need hosting the more space the people who do ask get. I have no physical limit set but if you start to hog HUGE ammounts of bandwidth and space I will cut it short.

If the content you wish to host is Winamp related then it is ok Rocker. I can set you up any sub you want with a FTP account and a CGI-BIN and if you want you can even have a domain point to the account.

Yes your OWN database of MySQL is included. Actually as many as you need are included. If you want an email account (POP and SMTP) I have that too. I can host you things too. That is pretty much any type of script you need I can help you setup. This is probably the best deal you will ever find for free.

I'm a little confused. Does it have to have anything to do with Winamp? or is that just something you would like?

I am happy with my current host except for 2 things. Slowness and 400 mb/month bandwidth restriction. So is it ok if it has nothing to do with winamp at all?

To straighten things up here.

It does NOT include Telnet access. MySQL will be accessed through phpMyAdmin. It does include access to your directory in FTP which will give you loosely around 20 MBs and a CGI-BIN (Files that use CGI/Perl actually don't need to go here so it is kinda pointless). It includes 1 sub domain and if you want you can point a domain name to it as well. The email regardless of if you have a domain pointer is "yourname@sub.drakesland.com" Hmm now you get Protected directories as well, and free scripts like I said earlier as well. I think the only thing you really lack is Telnet but if you need something to be done through Telnet and it isn't MySQL just tell me and I will do it for you.

Now I would prefer that sites have something to do with Winamp. If I get more than 5 requests the people who request Winamp sites get top priority since this is a deal for Winamp Lovers only if you haven't realized it.

Now if I don't get 5 requests (very unlikely) then I will divide the remaining space among the others. So in other words it is very unlikely that someone will be able to get a site that has more than 20 MBs and is not Winamp related.

So as it stands there are currently 3 people who want to have sites.

Winamprocker,
Naamloos,
and Bilbo Baggins

I know that Naamloos is a skinner and I have talked to you before on ICQ and AIM so you are in for sure. For Winamprocker and Bilbo Baggins I would like more detail about what exactly you plan to host.

All three of you need to email me and I will give you more specifics, etc.

Remember two more slots are up for grabs but you will get top priority if it is Winamp related and then if we have more than 2 winamp related sites it will go by who asks first obviously.

Now that I have offered such a great deal out of my own pocket, I have yet to see a

Thank you Drake or a

Ok that is ojms but a really sad attempt. Yes I will put you on the list but right after I just mentioned I got no thanks for my services and that these sites should mostly be Winamp related, you go and say "I'll have one of those" Also you won't have. You will be put on the list of may have.

Now I am sorry if I am comming across as mean but I really expect people to be more thankful for what I am doing. Do you have any idea the ammount of money I am spending on this hosting? The reason I am doing it is because I feel that I need to do something for the Winamp Community. I am not so sure if it was a good idea if everyone is just gonna be greedy about it and worry about all the little nitches involved.

Thank you Bilbo. You are so far the only one who has shown any appreciation here out.

Drake, many thanks are given to many forum members silently. You won't see a "THANK YOU MODS, WE LOVE YOU!" thread, but we (most) mean it, and would say it given the oppurtunity. But I do understand why you are concerned. Trust me, we are thankful.

Thank you for letting me know this. I actually know that a great deal of you do appreciate this service. I should of known that no matter where you are there are going to be greedy people and that they don't represent the majority of the Winamp users.

Anyways I described to a friend of mine this situation with the phrase "give a dog a bone and he will ask for a steak"

Anyways I just would like it if people didn't just ask for space and never even send a thank you. I guess it is just basic manners to say thank you when something is given to you for free.

I hope for the sake of all you out there that you say thank you for gifts you recieve on Christmas and other holidays...

Ok for no cost some of the best options are going to http://www.webmonkey.com and reading stuff on PHP or CGI/Perl

If this isn't good enough and not enough to really make sense or get you started. Then I definitely recommend going to the library and checking out some books there. You can buy some but that costs money. Barnes and Noble sell a good selection so check them out if you want.

Also if you want a free server to test on. Either install Apache locally with PHP, Perl, and MySQL as well (I have done this) and/or go to a place like spaceports.com that offers a free CGI server for both PHP and Perl. Not exactly the best option for real hosting but it works for just playing around and learning the stuff.

I am sure that at some point if you get serious that you will look to better hosting and at that point you will have to either spend the cash, suck up to people who spend cash, or get lucky and find someone like me who offers these one time only really good deals.

If you really are serious about learning PHP (with or without MySQL) then there is a great book from wrox called begining PHP4. I've found it very useful and even after a lot of practice with PHP still use it.

virtualave gives their users over 50 megs. I don't know if that is because i've been a member since 1999 or if they give that to new users. Plus they got all of the cgi/perl goodies as well. Plue it tis free. Banners though.

Ok now the list is closed. The following people should all email me personally at webmaster@drakesland.com

Winamprocker,
Naamloos,
ojms,
DexterHolland,
and Bilbo Baggins

Ok now for your question No*Name. Yes it is ok but I am limiting each persons bandwidth to 2 GBs a piece each month. This should be loads for a 20 MB site.

I am sorry binary since Holland had a Winamp related site and you didn't. Besides if you haven't even ever made a site then it would be a waste of a valuable resource.

I would appreciate if no one complains about who gets what since these people are my final decision.
