Have you installed Winamp 2.78 Update yet?

(Updates both out_wave & out_ds plugins to peter's (PP) new versions, also updates in_midi.dll & in_wave.dll to new pre v2.79 versions)

Further details: (READ THIS FIRST)
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=68811

WE recommend using DirectSound Output under WinXP.
After installing the update, goto:
Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Output: select DirectSound Output.

btw, what filetypes are you playing at the time?
Does it happen with all media types or just the one?
eg. MP3, WAV, MIDI, MOD, WMA, AudioCD....

If it's just AudioCD, try replacing the default plugin (in_cdda.dll) with CDreader.
Be sure to read the accompanying readme.txt for details.

Good luck . . . and I hope you understand all this ok!
