Well, this is what I built solely for my station, comprised of old parts I had laying around and new parts I bought:
Abit KT7A Motherboard 900mhz Duron 200mhz FSB 256 megs PC100 32 meg TNT2 Ultra Diamond Monster MX300 Sound D-Link NIC Great Big Cooling Fan Win2k Pro Runs pretty nicely, with a lot of free resources, and nice and stable - I built it last December, haven't rebooted it yet. You could probably go with a lower speed processor though, and if I was buying the ram right now, I'd get DDR or at least PC133. |

Oh.. I believe they're listed on the Shoutcast info screen. I remember it being about 300-400mhz processor, 128 megs of ram, something like that. I've run Shoutcast on a 400mhz K6-3 with 256 megs, but it was a little laggy.

Processer: 90Mhz
RAM Memory: 14KB for every listener (Add system overhead and 1.5MB) Bandwith: Brodcast bitrate times listeners [color=silver] God Put Me On Earth To Accomplish A Certain Number Of Things... RIGHT NOW I'M SO FAR BEHIND I'LL NEVER DIE!!! |

90mhz?!?!?!
I can't see that being much fun, running Shoutcast DSP on a 90mhz system.. I guess it depends whether you are talking about the DNAS or the DSP - I assumed you meant the DSP. Last edited by Shirow; 19th February 2002 at 23:32. |

It does depend on DSP or Server
DSP is pretty CPU intensive while the DNAS is RAM and badnwidth intensive. Andy decent newer computer will cut it. |

Hey its SuperDrew again,,,, so let me get this i need a board with at least a
- 300-400 mhz processor - 128-256 MB Ram ...if i don't want any serious issues? Now let me understand the DNAS VS DSP I should use DNAS (GUI) and get as much ram as possible as i will only have 640 kbps upstream Thanx for ur sharpshootin' aftershock... .... with a 400 mhz processor 256MB of ram and 640 kbps upstream, and a bitrate of 96,,, how many listeners should i set my max to....(6)? Shirow,, you mentioned a 400 mhz and 256MB RAM,,, this 'lag' problem you had was while you were using the computer for other programs? A 90MHZ is minimum with 14kbs of ram per listener? now that is amazing,,,, so an opeating system of win98/ virus protection/ firwall/ winamp/ shoucast/ should be all the software i would need on this.... I really appreciate everyones input,,, i just started my first mp3 broadcast a month ago... and now i want it off my PC on to a separate PC...with the lowest cost Drew

96k bitrate is about 11k per listener. I assume you mean 640kilobits, so you can support about 5 listeners.
I wasn't running the server on my 400mhz, just Winamp and the Shoutcast DSP plugin. I also had a crossfader, compressor/limiter running though. It would lag the mouse cursor sometimes. You can pick up a 900mhz Duron for $40 (which is what I did) so I wouldn't skimp on the CPU just to save a couple of bucks. |
