loud static and hissing

I recently downloaded winamp v.2.78 and I have been trying to listen to the streaming radio. However, when I listen to it, i will play fine and then all of the sudden the music will cut out and there will be an obnoxious static/hissing noise coming out of the speakers. This will las for between 20 ses and 1 min. This will happen at least once every 5 mins. Even when I am not using any other applications and I am just listening to music. I don't know any other way to desribe the noise, except obnoxious. Also, when this happens it does not say it is buffering. it appears as if it is continuing to play. I am connected to the internet via aol using DSL on windows 98. At first I thought it was the particular station i was listening to, but unfortnatley it was not, it happened when i lisened to any station. So any insight or help you could provide would be much appreciated.
Thank you

First make sure you have the latest sound card drivers
Second, install Winamp2 Update and use one of the DirectSound outputs.

If that doesn't work give us more details like OS, hardware (including Soundcard). Also, try these:
