Total Freeze of Win98SE

HI
INTRO
I have been using winamp for quite some time on several machienes and have never had any problem with it before. But,.. you knew thier would be one. I had to change my mother board so I changed my processor as well, all else stayed the same and now I have this werd problem.

PROBLEM
When running winamp, after a variable amount of time (usualy about 20 to 35 minuets, but some times longer)winamp frezzes win98SE completely. The only way I have to get out of it is a hard reset. It has done this on many differant songs so I am farliey sure that it is not due to any particular mp3 file.

WHAT I HAVE DONE
I have looked and red and looked and red not finding the source of the problem. I have made sure that I am using proper and up to date drivers for all of my hardware and that I have win98 fully updated as posible. I have also tried installing older versions of winamp and also tried installing the 3 beta. They all have this difficulty.

At this point all I have to add is HELP!! Music is life.

SYSTEM SPECS
AMD Duron 950,
Turtle beach Montiego II Quadzilla sound card,
Matrox G450 Duel head AGP Video card,
Net gear fa310 Eathernet card,
Maxtor hard drives 2x (cant remamber the specifics on each of them),
Viking v.90 Winmodem,
390mb PC-100 SDRAM,
Generic (unfortunatly) mother board with on board audio, disabled in the bios.

Any help is greatly apreachated, Sorry if english errors.

Dwayne

First, I'd normally ask if you've installed any (potentially dodgy) 3rd-party Winamp plugins, but if it also happens with wa3 then it's probably something else to blame.
Does the problem only occur with Winamp, or can you reproduce it with other players, eg. WMP, Real, etc?

Which Output plugin are you using?
WaveOut or DirectSound?
It's best to stick with WaveOut for Turtle Beach cards, because they seem to have an incompatibility issue with DirectX/DirectSound.

Apart from this, if the problem only surfaced when you installed the new mobo, then maybe the fault lies somewhere here? Try running the Hardware Diagnostic Tool (usually one of HWDIAG.EXE or HWINFO.EXE)

It might also be wise to run a full ScanDisk and check for any viruses.

Sure, it could be something else, like a Resource (IRQ) conflict or faulty drivers.
Check "System -> Device Manager" for any problems, and make sure you definitely have the correct & latest drivers for all your hardware. Here's a few good places to start:

I very much doubt if this is specifically a problem with Winamp, but there's no harm in trying some of these troubleshooter guides:

Also, try this official update patch:
Winamp 2.78 Update

Updates both out_wave & out_ds plugins to peter's new versions, also updates in_mod.dll, in_midi.dll & in_wave.dll to new pre v2.79 / 2.80 versions.
Also includes optional Experimental DS Output, extra Gapless WaveOut, in_vorbis.dll . . .

The "Space" visualisation plug in randomly froze my WindowsME on several separate occasions. It just knocked out the whole system upon adding one more song to my playlist (only the 489th, so its not an oversized playlist problem). I removed Space, rebooted a couple times and now it works. Definitely worth trying.

I also use a Matrox G450 and 98SE, and had very occasional problems.
I found that the very latest drivers for the Matrox were not as stable as the previous one.
Try going back to w9x_671.
Everything runs sweet now, it seems that the latest is not always the best.

Still Broke

Thanks all for the suggestions but it still frezes.

I havent installed any other plugins and havent used the one that comes with it at all.

I did try backing off to the last martox driver but this did not help.

I ran WMP and Real for several hours (all day in fact)and thier where no problems.

I have only used the wave output and not the direct sound, on reading your post I tried direct sound witch did the same thing.

no conflicts are showing in the hardware IRQ or otherwize

I tried the 2.78 update with no resolution.

ARRRGGGG!!!!

That used to happen to me, I upgraded everything but my video card and when I ran winamp for about 15 or so minutes my whole system froze. so I bought a new video card (I needed a new one anyway, it was only a 4 meg video card on a 800mhz system.)

damn my computer is old.

System freeze in WIN98SE

I have been using Winamp ever since it's been on the go...never any problems what so ever. But recently, playing either mp3's or streaming off MP3.com, BANG everything froze and whatever sound bit was playing at the time it just keeps looping. The only way to reboot is power switch.

I'm running a Dell PIII 450 w/256MB ram and using Creative Soundblaster Live.

I've done nothing to my computer as in installing anything besides installing Vr 3 Winamp beta vr and it still freezes. Like the other fella that has this prob I can us WMP and Real player and even Creative play centre all with no lock up. BUT i dont want to use them I want my back BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Please help me

And you've tried EVERYTHING mentioned above?
You've also checked to make sure gen_nomad.dll hasn't reared its ugly head?

Total THAW of WIN98SE

I uninstalled Winamp again and Dl the 2.78vr along with the patch. All seems to be working fine. It must have been the patch because I've uninstalled and reinstalled about a dozen times no relizing there was a patch. So my fingers ar crossed...running strong now on 4 hours.

Thanks
