I'm getting 2-3 seconds of statice about every 30 sec. or so throughout entire play

When I play music, no matter which mp3, new old, whatever, The music sounds great, except that every 30-45 seconds or so, I get this annoying static sound that lasts for about 2 or 3 seconds. I'm not sure what to do. I've checked the speaker wires, and they're fine. I haven't the foggiest idea what to check next.

Try the Winamp2 update: http://www.blorp.com/~peter/zips/wa2update.exe
Download it, and install it.
Also update your sound card drivers.

I downloaded the update. It worked. But then aren't they supposed to?
