ASPI/DAC glitch
1. Yes - I searched these forums and tried some ideas long before posting this :-)
2. PII 450 196 megs WinMe SBLive with latest drivers P.O.S. Smart and Friendly CD-R (rebadged Yamaha) All has worked fine for 6+ months 3. Been using MMJB(ugh) on a different machine to rip CD-->MP3 and got tired of it. Downloaded Easy CD-DA Extractor (http://www.poikosoft.com/) and installed it. 4. After install of above, ran program and it didn't work. Did a little troubleshooting/investigating and found no DAE capable devices listed for the software. (Been using DAE with my CD drive via winamp and WM7 for a while now, and it supports DAE just fine). Uninstalled crap cd ripping software. 5. Pop a CD in while I surf the web for a better ripper.... low and behold "no aspi layer present" error from winamp. Grabbed latest aspi kit and aspicheck from adaptec and made sure all was well. Same error from winamp. 6. Tried WM7 to play the CD....was informed that since no Digital devices were present I would have to listen to CD's in analog mode with WM7. Have never seen this before. 7. Re-tried ASPI install. 8. Beat head in frustration. I'm trying for tech support from the cd-da x-tractor guys as well, but have heard nothing. Any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks for replying djspork..and I'm sure you're 100% correct about re-installing windows would solve this problem. So would the system restore if I hadn't disabled it. But this is a software development machine and that means several days of painstakingly setting back up the compiliers and a realtime subsystem that runs on it...so I'm hoping one of these audio gurus (HINT DAMMIT
) might have a different suggestion. I'll check out real jukebox though...thanks man

Argghhh! No!
Do NOT try RealPukebox! If you thought MMJB was bad (and believe me, it is) then lord help you with RJB. The best freeware rippers are: CDex and EAC If no Adaptec hardware/software is installed on the machine, then you won't be able to install the latest ASPI layer. You need to install the older version first, then do the upgrade. There's direct links in the url's below (ASPI Drivers section), plus there's also a workaround where you goto Add New Hardware Control Panel and manually add an Adaptec SCSI Adapter. At first I thought you were just getting the ASPI error from Winamp only, after installing the CDReader plugin . . . so I assumed CDReader wasn't configured properly. But if you're getting errors from other software too, then this definitely suggests a problem with the CD-ROM drivers and the SCSI / ASPI-Layer drivers. There's also a strong possibility that MMJB has screwed up your registry, especially if you've uninstalled it. Basically, it removes the AudioCD registry key ![]() Have you definitely checked out all these? Hope ya don't mind

*******CAUTION LONG POST******
Diggity it's fixed!! <insert drunken happyasf*ck dance here> Here's what i did for _future_ *sniker* reference (BTW DJEGG - MMJB was and still is on a different machine so I didn't fool with the reg...and thanks for the heads up on the rippers) 1. SELECTIVELY reinstalled WinME. (That means a painstaking process of opening all the cabs on the CD and manualy copying and moving files...don't try this at home kids.) Retry the ASPI install. verdict - no change 2. Uninstalled NERO and CloneCD Retry the ASPI install. verdict - no change 3. Installed evil EZ CD creator 4 that came with P.O.S. cd-burner. Retry ASPI install. verdict - fixed. thank god. 4. Enjoyed listening to a few cd's 5. Uninstalled ez cd creator4 6. Reinstalled Nero and CloneCD Everything works again. Here's what had happened I think - One of the 2 ASPI files (not sure if it was the dll or the vxd) had a correct header, yet was corrupted somehow. This allowed it to report as the correct file to Windows and to the aspicheck program, but the data in the file was bum and didnt work when called to run. When i reinstalled EZCD it wrote a correct but out of date file to the aspi layer in windows. The aspi check recognized the file as out of date and overwrote it with the new up to date version. I probably could have manually recopied the aspi files and fixed it without all the installs, but clouded by dope and beer i never tried this. So DJEgg was correct again with his suggestion of just installing old aspi software and overwriting it. Too bad I didn't check back before i went hellbound with this thing LOL. Kudo's and thanks tonnes man...Having found these forums I'll start reading them and if there's ANYTHING I can do to help I'm on it.... |

Actually ASPI Layer 4.70 is now available from Adaptec's site and it does not require a previous installation nor an Adaptec product in order to install... Just note that a lot of people I know have been complaining about erratic behavior on XP, works fine on my machine though...
