Windows 98se compared to WindowsME
My computer came with WindowsME installed. A few of my friends kept saying that WindowsME was crap compared to Windows 98, that ME didn't handle memory all that well, that ME was Microsoft's most unstable OS to date, that ME was basically a hack & slash job put out by microsoft to seem current while they were putting finishing touches on XP. I got a copy of Windows 98se and did a clean install on my machine and I've been running it for about two months. I don't see a big difference between the way the two systems run, so I'm wondering if someone can give me some educated information on the differences between them. Is what my friends said true, or is there some sort of anti-WindowsME meme running in my friends minds?
Depending on the info I get I may just re-install ME until XP's been around for a while. |

XP is probably the best MS OS, I would suggest getting that. But if you don't want to spend money on it for a while, Don't. They say that 98se is somewhat better than ME. Not much difference though really. ME supposedly has more crashes on the same programs than 98. Other than that I never really saw a difference between them.

I've had 98se and have ME and Me is so much more reliable! 98 crashed at every availble opertunity, ME only half the time it could have crashed it did. personaly all I can say is I have yet to see an OS good enough to class as usable. even Mac's go into that (as you know I'm a big fan of Mac's)

Let me correct your friends. Windows Millennium is basically Windows 98 SE which Microsft changed by adding extra features (such as system restore) and a few bug fixes etc etc. It is a visually better system and to me looks more stable. The reason Window Millennium hasnt as much difference as 98 to XP has is cos of this:
It was nearing the Millennium and Bill Gates wanted to make a very good OS that was going to "totally change" Windows. Bill saw that if they wanted to make this new and efficient OS they would not be able to finish it by the Millennium so Bill told his people to build on 98 so they added a few features from the 2000 OS and kept lots from 98 and sold it as Millennium. Windows 2000 then came out and became this super OS for serious business people! I thought, what the hell, lets try this new OS out! I installed 2000 on my PC and im not lying when i say that over the space of 6 months my PC NEVER CRASHED!!! Now i have XP which does crash and i want to install 2000 again! I prefer having the latest OS with nice little features and other stuff though so thats why i stick to XP! Windows 2000 Professional |

XP.....XP.....XP.....
Although I am using Windows98SE at the moment, but during my brief spell with XP, I found that XP is much, much better than 98.And some of the features of XP is very good, considering it came from a company call Micro$oft. Oh,yeah I turn back to 98 because my computer keeps on crashing due to a hardware failure, and I can't seem to find out what is the hardware that is failing on me. Anyone know of any software that could help me identify if any of my hardware is going to die? |

Windows ME is a bloated unstable version of 98. I'm not a big fan of the IE interface at the best of times, so run 98lite and NT4.0 (with a standalone IE just for internet browsing).
Sadly I'm going to have to upgrade to XP at some point, as new peripherals obviously will end up not being supported. Still, I'll happily admit that XP is more stable than 98 and more compatible than NT4 so it's probably worth the upgrade. I just wish Microsoft would release USB and Firewire support and DirectX 8 for NT4. Then I would have the perfect OS. Shame it's not gonna happen. |

ME never gave me any problems if i restarted every day or so. after 4-5 days it would have some sort of error (generally) and force a restart if i didnt.

Well, My personal feeling has always been:
Win95: Uberfast, but now out of date. Better compatability with DOS appz, a bit unstable. Win98: Compatable but not yet outdated. Slower than 95 (due to Active Desktop, etc.). A bit more unstable due to more shit... WinME: Bloated like a motherfucker. More unstable than 98 for similar reasons (way more shit) Win2K: Sacrifices speed for stability. Probably about the speed of a 98/ME install. Less compatable, but won't crash on you as much as 95/98/ME. WinXP: A bit slower than 2K (except in terms of bootup speed). Slightly better compatability. I personally prefer 2k overall. Also, you might want to try Windows 98/ME with 98lite (www.98lite.net) - gives you the compatability of 98/ME but with the speed of Win95. ? |
