Getting Spectrum info?

I was wondering if anyone had an easy example of how to get the spectrum analysis or even a Fourier transform from winamp?

I am developing a plugin for a class project that make each color in a strand of xmas lights go to one of 4 bands of the spectrum. I would greatly appreciate any help with breaking down the the waveform into its spectral components.
