The Queen Mother

I bet you thought this was a nice little thread about her.

WRONG!

I am sick to the back teeth of this woman who did sod all for this country being splahsed over the news, papers, EVERYWHERE!!!. It makes me angry all these people proclaiming what a great lady she was, and how they hold her high in their hearts.

BULLSHIT!

THey did not know her. She did not know them. She did not do anything for them. She had nothing in common with the ordinary people who make this country work.

I am glad now that she has been tossed in her hole and the worms are not hungry.

i'm almost with Baggins here

I'm not a fan of the 'Royal Family'. They're making quite a meal about the whole thing. It's only The Queens Mother, not the Queen for goodness sake.

Many people die. I don't see them getting the same amount of attention.

So no, i don't care at all about recent events..

I believe that a fuss should be made of things like the births, marriages, and deaths of the royals. It's part of the heritage of the country and everything, and I feel it would be a sad day to see us become a republic.

I thought the whole Diana funeral was a bit over the top, with a week of mourning and everything, but the only reason that the Queen Mother's funeral has been so publicly televised and everything is because it seems to be what the majority of the public want - take for example those who queued for hours to see her lying in state.

To take the other point of view I for one would not queue for five hours, nor am I overcome by grief - I mean she did live a very luxerious lifestyle for over 100 years, which is pretty good going on anyones reckoning.

However, whatever anyone's views, it's nearly done with anyway.

I wish they did flame her. As it is, she has got to pollute the earth with ther fake hips. still, the worms can feed on her flesh.

At one time (like pre Parliamentary control) i would have said it was right to celebrate the Royal family. Since Parliament became the law making body of this country, the Royals became little more than another aristocratic family. Do we cry when little lord fauntleroy dies? no.

Because before she died she was out of sight and out of mind. Now that she's dead they have "The Queen Mother" pasted all over the news and she won't go away.

Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls had a bigger impact on my life but they never hogged the spotlight while dead, wait maybe they did? Uhh nevermind.

GO AWAY QUEEN LADY! She's just another broad in my opinion, nothing less nothing more! "You are the weakest link, GOODBYE!"

Um, i think that is kinda wrong. Her dead body may be "hogging the spotlight" but people still desereve respect. But i know, she or any other member of the royal family is in NO way superior to me or you!!

has anyone here ever heard the phrase "don't speak ill of the dead"

she may not have had a large impact on your life, but she was still a human being, she had a family, she had friends, don't forget what she may have meant to those people

i'm not fan of the royals either, but there is a difference between not liking someone, and insulting them after they are dead

this is wrong

she may not have had power in england, but she, and the rest of the royal family are symbols
symbols of what sets europe, and the rest of the old world, apart from other places

she is a woman who lived a long life, she witnessed many important events within her lifetime, and now she's gone

fed. up. with. all. that. shit.

i have no interest in her funeral. i'm sure it was lovely. but all the people who really cared could have watched it on one channel... coverage on four TV channels was not necessary.

and they cancelled diagnosis murder

No!

This country needs a Royal family that actually has powers and does things, and a publicly adored strong-willed King to lead it. It's not their fault that so many people are ignorant of tradition, history, or in this case tact. Basically, the royals need a job (not just the State Opening of Parliament and the countless minor events they open).

To Bilbo, Inatlantis and anyone else whining about it... I'm lost. Yes, the media coverage was excessive and I'm not saying it's entirely justified, but judging by the reactions of people who do have a sense of pride or who felt saddened by the loss of someone of that stature and personality, even if they had never met her, the coverage was somewhat called for. Jesus, guys, they interrupted the TV schedule and the story gave the newspapers a field day. So what? Ignore it and for fuck's sake get over yourselves.

And no, I didn't watch the funeral.

I seem to be in the minority here. We Americans don't get to see that much pomp and ceremony every day. I enjoyed watching it. I enjoy the stories that come out of Buckingham Palace.
As for the Queen Mother (and the rest of the royals) not doing anything, I think they do provide a very necessary focal-point for the British people. Americans don't have that source to rally around (Unless you live in Chicago, where a member of the Daley family has been mayor almost nonstop since 1962).
Of course, its just my opinion.

nobody here really rallies around the royals though. it's kind of a smaller, cultish thing (particularly in deepest darkest scotland)...

it's kinda like a british oprah winfrey, rather than some big aspirational thing.

I do not care about the TV schedules, as I am not a TV watching person much, but what gets me is the way that we are all assumed to be of the same thought here and that we are all supposed to love this woman. The only member of the Royal family I like is Prince Philip, and that is only because he makes so many mistakes it is funny. I do not like the Royal family.

this is all showbizz sickness.

Queen mom is just another human being. all respect to her whether alive or dead now. but she's not better than anyone else dying in the world daily.. say of hunger in Africa or of violence in the M.East.
you're right.. media are to be flamed for taking advantage of any occasion just to make events and create hype.

Are we all assumed to be of that thought? Or would saying on the news "The Queen Mother's Dead, but for those of you who don't give a toss we'll move on to other news" be inappropriate? Like I said, they catered for people who do care.

I don't particularly like the Royal family but I'm proud that this country has one, and I respect the frigging dead whether I liked them or not!!

they gave an inordinate amount of time to her though. i'm sorry, but 28 minutes on the queen mum, then 2 minutes explaining 20 people died in israel is inappropriate, and only serves to widen percieved class differences.

This turned up in my e-mail today.

(Said to be) Real excerpts from the Queen Mum's Book of Remembrance:

"When Diana died I swore I would never smile again, but eventually I did. Now the Queen Mum has gone I cannot image that I will ever smile for the rest of my life, but I will probably break that one too".

"I thought she would live forever, she has let us all down very badly"

"She was a trooper and she never gave up. I remember one time she was visiting a school and I asked her if she would like to make a visit to the cloakroom before she left. 'No' she replied, 'I didn't give in to the Nazis and I won't give in to the bladder'. That's how she was, a fighter, who refused to be beaten by anything. She pissed herself later though, it was sickening".

"She was a marvelous woman, and a wonderful lover".

"I am absolutely devastated, at least we could have got the day off".

"How refreshing to be able to mourn the death of a member of the Royal family without being accused of being homosexual".

"Her death should act as a warning to others who think it is cool to experiment with drugs".

"Once again the Queen is not upset enough for my liking, the woman should have a bit more compassion. How would she feel if it was her mother?"

"Good God, who is next, Geri Halliwell?".

"If only I could get my hands on that fish bone right now, you heartless bastard!"

"I think that the Queen Mum and Princess Diana are our very own Twin Trade Towers. At last we can look the people of New York in the face".

"She had such a difficult life, always battling against adversity and misfortune. Let us hope that if there is a next time round she is given a life of privilege and comfort"
