Winamp won't play a certain file

I've encoutered this problem with winamp 2.79 (both lite & full) :
I have a certain audio track that just won't run on Winamp. MS Windows Media Player plays it smoothly on the other hand. Winamp won't even read the track's length (the playlist window won't display it's length in time ... just a blank). And the main window gives the "red dot" on the left side. I've uploaded a screen capture of the window (along with the MPEG info box) to :

http://alkaline.hypermart.net/images/winamp.gif

I've also uploaded the mp3 track (just in case) :

http://alkaline.hypermart.net/khaled_mp3.xyz

(not to worry - it's not copyright material).

Note:
1. I don't know if this is related or not, but a lot of the stuff in the "MPEG file info box" is different than other files, e.g. the "Emphasis" (whatever that is).
2. I've renamed the file from "Khaled Selim - 3alam Tani (Duetto).mp3" to simply "Khaled_mp3.xyz" just before uploading (just in case the spaces cause any trouble).

Aaanyway, I'm running a Win2K 500MHz AMD K6-2 system with a Crystal WDM sound card (yes, i know it's cheap) and an ATI Rage IIC AGP display card. Latest drivers and service packs installed.

I don't think thta is a MP3 file at all. In WiMP do you get file info? What does it say? Maybe a renamed WMA file?

How can I tell ?
All I know is that it was created with Audio Converter (http://www.dennisre.com/audconv/index.html) according to the file properties description in WiMP. Plus; doesn't Winamp 2.79-full support windows media ? I installed this version with this feature selected.

Yeah, Winamp Full supports WMA up to v7, but not the new v8 format...
but the file needs to have the WMA extension in the first place for Winamp to know it's a WMA file, otherwise the MP3 Decoder will erroneously try to play it.

In the file info box it says MPEG 1.0 Layer 1
This suggests for sure that it's not an MP3 file,
and would normally suggest it's an .MP1 file, but the file info box can report anything like this if the file isn't a proper MP3 file but it's got the .MP3 extension.

I'd download the file, but I'm only on a 56k modem and 5mb takes too long. I can't even try to stream it into WiMP because of the XYZ extension. I tried adding XYZ to Winamp's in_mp3.dll list of supported extensions, but the file would NOT stream (this could be due to the bitrate, but more than likely because in_mp3.dll can't decode/recognize the format)

Yep ... bull's eye ... Winamp worked (and brilliantly I might add) when I gave the file a WMA extension.

The thing is, apparently, the host site (hypermart) doesn't allow downloads of files with the mp3 extension, that's why I renamed it to *.xyz rather than *.mp3 to begin with.

One more thing ... couldn't the people behind winamp make the future versions determine the file type (encoding type) without relying on the file's extension ? Sort of like WiMP. I mean don't files of certain types have certain headers or something ?
BTW; I'm not a programmer and have absolutely no programming experience whatsoever (except with MS Quick-BASIC), so please excuse my ignorance if that sounded like complete garbage.

It would be nice, but I don't think it's possible.
Winamp2 uses a plugin structure to determine how files are dealt with.
Each individual input plugin deals with its respective formats, and uses the file extension as the determinable factor.
WiMP is just hard coded to work with the system codecs / mci components, and doesn't use input plugins.
Big difference!

WinAmp cddb2 service .ext (extention on a music file)

Hello :
This is not related to your current problem but could
present itself shortly . The issue to burning cd-music-roms
after previewing the music in WinAmp just prior to buring the
music file .
WinAmp has what is called a CDDB2 music-service attached to its
operations . When you preview music files , with winAmp , to select music to burn ... this cddb2 service will jump up and attach its extention to the music file .... it removes the mp3 extention at the end of the file and alters the file .... then when you go to use the
NERO CD-ROM burning application to burn the music files .... it prevents NERO from buring the files . Nero pops up a window claiming it can not burn music files with the cddb2 extention because it says the file is .... TOO SLOW .... .
Also the CDDB2-service , in WinAmp , causes my system to lock many seconds while it does its terrible deed . It actully commandeers my entire system while it functions; changing my file . So consider this while your having problems with music files and using WINAMP . Perhaps the cddbe service will not pop a window evertime you view your music files with winamp .... but ... be working in the back ground any way . I have wrote NullSoft tech support as to how to disable this so called cddb2-service to rid myself of it ..... you should do the same .... after all i know what the name of my music file is ... i do not need some service to find a name for it .Please spread the word .

Huh?

Firstly, tracks on standard AudioCD's don't have the .MP3 extension.
Secondly, CDDB2 only works with AudioCD's. It's got nothing to do with MP3.
Thirdly, CDDB2 can be disabled via:
Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Plugins -> Input -> CD Plugin -> config: Uncheck "use cddb"
(this is well documented btw)
Fourthly, this is NOT a bug
Fifthly, this has got nothing to do with WMA files having the wrong extension (which is what this whole thread was initially about).
Sixthly (?) What's Winamp got to do with burning MP3 to CD with Nero?
Is it an .m3u playlist you're refering to or something?
Seventhly, I've whacked your crosspost in the WA3 forum.

Bye bye
