Record companies to block cd copying to mp3

Hello Everyone,

I am currently living in Sydney for a year and have just read some rather disturbing news. Aparently Sony has developed some new technology to stop there music cds working in computers and dvd players. This was apperently tested on the recent celine dion album. Computers can't play the cds and it causes them to crash!

They rekon it will be the end of copying cds and the end of mp3s, anyone know any ways to get around this because i have only just bought a 500 pound mp3 player for my car and what right do they have to stop me copying cds which i buy on to my computer.

I would be interested in hearing what you guys think and if any software is being developed to get around this.

Cheers Guys,

Matt

First off I know nothing of the technicalities of audio. But I would bet there will be ways around it. At the very least it would seem one could input the feed from the player into their pc. Most likely loose some sound quality that way. Someone will find a way with minimal loss. Sony or whoever can control the CD format but they can`t control the actual sound. I wouldn`t worry about it being the end of mp3s. Would be as hard to stop them as a herd of wild horses.
If you buy the CD you should be able to copy it. Legally it would probably be like copyrighted text. You could not distribute it without permission, especially not for profit.

Stopping mp3s from being ripped from CDs is IMPOSSIBLE, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY record companies can stop this. All anyone has to do is hook up a portable CD player to the Micorphone or Line In on any sound card and record an mp3 from that. When will they ever learn?

I read acout it in Computer Weekly (on teh back page). If I ever come across any CDs like this they're going straight back to the shop, as I don't in fact own a CD player - just the computer.

This is because I mainly listen to vinyl or mp3, so have a record player, radio, and computer connected to my amplifyer unit. Therefore if a CD I buy won't play in the computer it's not fit for the purpose which I bought it for so it can be returned to the shop.

If everyone does the same (which I know is just pie in the sky) then the record companies would have to issue standards CDs again.

the first time somehthing like this was tried in the uk, there were so many complaintes about CD's that didn't work in CD-Rom drives, that the record company offered replacements.

1) Right: There´ll be always a way to record audio and get wav/mp3 file from it..

2) mp3s are sucha good way to promote an unknown band like mine

3) As a band you don´t earn any $ until you sold a large amount of CDs (depends on the contract, but it´s normally about 50.000 CDs), cause you get only 6-12% profit for a sold CD, and you have to pay back costs for music video, advertising etc. (it´s nearly impossible to get a video on the screen with costs less than 50.000 $ - that´s ´the double of average costs of a professional CD recording and production)

download our mp3s, copy it, copy it, copy it
it´s 128 kpbs - but it´s for free!

I wouldnt stand for it too...

If i bought a cd that was like that i'd complain....because it's the owners right to be able to make a backup of the original.
