Incomplete Variable Bitrate MP3's
I know that variable bitrate MP3s cannot have their length estimated. You can't calculate their length by dividing size/bitrate since the bitrate changes all the time. This is why encoders add a tag in the beginning of the file mentioning the song length. But what troubles me is with some incomplete MP3's I have. They are reported as having the ful length (since this is what the tag suggests) but they are much smaller. What can I do so WinAmp will display correct song length and progress?

Please download MP3Utility or Encspot, and use them to analyze those VBR MP3s.
http://www.geocities.com/mp3utility http://www.guerillasoft.com/encspot It could be due to FhG VBRI headers causing the mp3 decoder problems. http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=51934 1) Problem reading time/bitrate of FhG VBRI MP3 headers, reported here Egg's comments: [revised: 01/09/01] Problem caused by in_mp3.dll's inability to correctly read VBRI frame headers in MP3's encoded with rippers using the FhG encoder (MMJB, FastEnc, etc) Files play ok, but time display & bitrate readings are messed up. [edit: inserted by DJEgg] ...and don't forget to try Peter's vbrfix too. You can also checkmark "show average bitrate for vbr" in MPEG Audio Decoder config (c/o Prefs -> Plugins -> Output -> in_mp3.dll -> config -> decoder tab), though this is probably irrelevant to this particular case? ![]() Incomplete means corrupted in my books
