Game music question-

I'm trying to extract the neat orchestral music from "Heros of Might and Magic 4" but am unable to. I assume its in a file called "music.h4r" which I tried to open in pkzip to no avail. Does anyone have a trick to doing this?

There is this delightful program called GAP (Game Audio Player) which someone on the forums once pointed me to. It can play/convert all kinds of proprietary game audio formats. Unfortunately, I don't have a link, although I'm sure you can find it on Google.

IIRC Heroes 3 had all of it's music in .mp3 format on the install disc and in the Program File folder. Have you completely explored both of these. I don't have HOMM 4 so I don't know if it's different.

BTW, how is 4? I loved three but haven't finished either expansion.

You could always run Total Recorder in the background while playing the game. Of course, you will need major editing work after the job is done, but you will still end up with what you want

Yes, it appears that the music is in an mp3 like format because i see reference to "mp3" in the other files. I've looked everywhere but couldn't find anything more promising than that music.h4r, my guess being that they are somehow compressed in there.

RM- where can I get total recorder?

Try Powerarchiver to open the file... maybe it is compressed in another scheme, such as RAR or ACE. Powerarchiver supports virtually every compression scheme out there. Total Recorder can be found here.

Our very own Peter has a similar program called WinRipper on his website that I found to be better than GAP.

Damnation...

that power archive couldnt figure it out, BB's and RM's programs couldnt do it...

So after 2 hours of searching through mindless b-boards, i came upon a link to a RUSSIAN site that has a special tool just for extracting these very songs- apparantly their compression was a little tricky the way they did it.

http://www.heroes.ag*****stuff/music/

but now i'm happy That russian site also has the mp3's on there individually- i HIGHLY suggest you download the "nature" and "chaos" themes... especcially if you like epic choral music (Bilbo...)

the "Might" theme is also excellent... it has the "infernal machine" sound down pat.
