help me, people

yes, i know this isn't anything to do with winamp, but i didn't know where else to turn- my problem is this... i can't get GTA3 to run through win2k. it runs through Me (on the other partition) but since it's a million times slower for all games, i really would like to get it working on 2k... i've updated drivers, directx, everything... it drops out just before the "credits movie" (or right after the "rockstar" logo) when it's starting out, and just drops back to desktop, which is annoying...

is this maybe a sevice pack thing? i don't have either service pack for win2k (they're too big to fit on disks )... i'm pretty sure there's nothing really wrong with the computer set-up (i did it all myself) so it *must* be something up with the OS (i've set up both with the same driver revisions, obviously the right ones for each OS, but the same versions). i have a geforce2 MX, athlon processor, videologic sonicfury sound and a few things that'll make no real difference...

oh, and cheers

Don't you have to download the service packs?

i don't know how the pc version of gta3 works, but i've had that problem many times with other games, and i'm guessing it's dropping out right when it's supposed to start rendering 3d content... if that is the case, then congratulations. you are a victim of the only concievable problem that win2000 has for normal desktop users. (a big deal if you play a lot of games)... i would suggest winxp, but i'd probably get flamed for it, so yeah, tough luck zootm, wish there was more.

GTA3 needs a monster PC to run it properly anyway, so i dunno whether it is going ot be worth fixing the problem to play a stuttery game.

nope, it's not that. it drops out at the point it's supposed to be playing a movie file. the weird thing is, it plays the first movie file, but not the second...

and win2k always worked for games (better that winMe) for me before... i can still play the game, it's just damn slow, and on a 1300MHz processor, i'd be inclined to say something was up.

i'd find out what kind of movie the first and second are. i used to have a problem playing bink video files (which made diablo2 impossible ). i forget how to fix it. so if it's a video file, then this sounds fixable. too bad i don't know how. i relegate to some less full of shit now.

First question that comes to mind is "Is it a pirated copy?"

Considering your response in the CDs thread, I wouldn't think so though.

www.gta3forums.com are much much better, as that troubleshooting is only a copy of the readme file that comes with the game.

According to the forums ^ most of the problems that people seem to get are when they have pirated version. Looks like i am gonna have to get the NoCD crack

I'm not sure if this works the same in 2k as it does in xp, I'm sure it's in 2k, but it might be in a different place.

If you are having compatibility problems in XP you right click on the exe file (not the shortcut) and select properties, then select the compatibility tab. I've never tried using it, but if it works I have a suspision that it might not run optimally

that's not slow to load, that's an error

it's actually quite quick, at least here...
