Chaucer wrote in Middle English, which is technically a different language from English. Goes to show that time as well as distance make a difference in linguistics. Shakespeare wrote in "English" though and his language is still way different from ours.

Good points about the "u" Curi0us_George.

Someone needs to start a thread where Mexicans and European Spaniards can debate the differences in their language...

If we really wanted to be anal, we could say that all of the European languages are just different dialects of Indo-European.

Spelling curious without the "u" would be quite atrocious.

Really, though. The Cherokees have their own language (they actually pronounce the name as "Cha La Gee", which is written with three characters, one for each syllable), just as the Sioux, and most other Native Americans. There was never a standard "American".

Prehistoric languages existed. There is, infact, much evidence to support the theory that neanderthals were endowed with speech. Sumerian was merely the first historic language. Cuneiform tablets exist in great numbers.

Every language exists in the same way as English. No languages are "pure".

Slang and proper are useless terms. Every single word in every single language was made up at some point. Slang words are just newer words, or words that the upper-class frowns upon. Every word you know was, at some point, what we would now call slang.
