idz kulr . Actualy since we colonials speak "english" would not the English spelling of colour be considered to be correct in "proper" or formal usage, as opposed to the informal spelling of color? "Nothing really matters much to me"-Freddie Mercury |

Chaucer wrote in Middle English, which is technically a different language from English. Goes to show that time as well as distance make a difference in linguistics. Shakespeare wrote in "English" though and his language is still way different from ours.
Good points about the "u" Curi0us_George. Someone needs to start a thread where Mexicans and European Spaniards can debate the differences in their language...

We Brits should start re-using Middle English, the insults were funnier.

i thought it was established in another thread last week that americans speak english and the english speak japanese 2.0, or engrish... did you guys forget?
and you're arguing about the wrong language. if we're going to argue primacy of spelling and pronunciations, let's revert back to the ancient babylonian and sumerian, the first real languages developed, of which no traces currently exist. but oh wait, we can't... too bad. you all suck. shut up. ;-) (you know i'm just kidding) |

While we're on the topic of language, how the hell did Peggy become a nickname for Margaret?

English isn't a language in its own right, it is a collection of all sorts of other languages, new and old, proper and slang.

Slang and proper are useless terms. Every single word in every single language was made up at some point. Slang words are just newer words, or words that the upper-class frowns upon. I actually type everything in glossolalia and you all just see what your mind fills in. Watch what happens if I turn off the consciousness filter:
