Italy 1 - 2 South Korea

What an exicting game of football. Esp the end of the second half and injury time.

The better team won. That is for sure.

Italy only have themselves to blame for this, they played their awful style of get a goal, and retreat into their shells. They should have taken the loss to Croatia as a warning that they should not adopt that style. Korea really took the gaem to them, and I was definatly on the Korean side for this match.

On the other hand though, Italy did show why they are such a highly rated team. Maldini was awesome today.

Wow - do you all really watch all these games? I'm impressed with the depth of your knowledge - but then of course I'm american, so you could explain the offsides rule to me and I'd be impressed.

I actually had a Swedish friend explain the offsides rule to me the other day. It still doesn't make any sense to me.

It's offside, the offside rule. No 's' at the end for goodness sake!

So another favourite is out. Best chance England will get. They'll probably beat Brazil and follow that with a loss to a crappy team, like they usually do.

I would come up with sme stappy retort, but the fact that I don't even understand the rule would dull the impact a bit, so I'll just accept that there is no 's'.

Prediction
England 2 : Brazil 1

I am just a normal person sitting on the bench and reading newspaper and having a cup of coffee. Why can't people see that?

That was a good game, I loved it when they scored at the end, that was fantastic. I have to say I think they deserved it, they showed a lot of spirit and never really gave up. The manager made some good gambles with substitutions which paid off. I can see them beating Spain too.

[bad explanation]
There must be at least 2 people between an attacker and the goal when a ball is played forward. One of these is usually the goalkeeper. If there is only one person between the attacker and goal when the ball is played forward the player is deamed offside and a freekick awarded.

The arrogance of the so-called "world-class" teams has been the defining characteristic of this World Cup. Countries such as France, Argentina, Portugal, and now Italy, have turned up and expected to just walk through to the latter stages. Instead they have been embarrassed by teams with far more passion and determination, not to mention skill.

Hopefully this is a permanebt thing, and future tournaments will be more open and unpredicable.

When will they learn? Never sit back and defend a 1-0 lead! (unless it's England v Argentina, of course)

There's no need to tell me when I'm right;
I operate on that principle exclusively and with absolute certainty

I do not think that it was a case of bad ego with the Italians, more a case of negative tactics by the players that has been apparent in Italian international soccer for years.

Of course we do!

Football is the favourite international sport. Surely you must have something in America that everyone watches - like an American baseball championship or something...

Not really. The American (and to a lesser extent, North American) viewing public is split between four different sporting championships. There aren't too many people who are fanatical about all four.

Like rm' said, we are split. I couldn't care less about most sports. Soccer is semi-interesting to watch.

Baseball is no longer "the American Pastime". It hasn't been for a long time. It lost a lot of fans during those strikes a while back, too, when the players were whining like little bitches about multi-million dollar salaries not being enough. Baseball is rather boring to watch, too.

As for the Italians, bleh. I'm glad they lost. I got pissed off watching the game against South Korea. The Italians spent way too much time grabbing shirts and pushing the South Koreans around. I think it was a bad call when the Italian (what's his name?) got sent off, though.

I guess I was just asking because the games are off in Asia, and on at all times of the day, and to see them I imagine that you have to juggle your schedule a bit (the games are on at 11:30pm and 4:30am here).
I do watch a lot of the American Football playoffs, but they are put on at convenient times - I doubt that I would be as dedicated as you are to watch them in the middle of the night.
Good luck to your favorite team, whoever they might be! (Assuming they are still in it)

Well, I am sure that he will find another club pretty fast. Its almost as farcical as the Arsenal and Junichi Inamoto case.
