Speakers, My kingdom for speakers.

the speakers in my car are dying, and they need to be replaced. as soon as my birthday rolls around, I'm going to use my cash from that to get new speakers(asking my parents for new speakers is out of the question, since they are getting me new rims and tires) I am looking to spend $200 USD total(for all 4 speakers), but will go as high as $250 if I need to. I need two 5 1/4 inch up front and either two 5 1/4 inch rears or two 6 1/2 inch rears. My dad and I are pretty good with wiring and mechanical work, so installation shouldn't be a problem. So, my question is, what should I get, I'm leaning towards Sony right now, but I really don't know too much about this sort of stuff.

Although I am a self-acknowledged dimwit when it comes to car audio, taking into account their other products, I believe that Sony would be out of your price range.

at the local best buy it is 70 something for the 5 1/4 and 90 something for the 6 1/2, so no, they are not out of the price range.

$200 usd should be enough for a nice pair of phillips 6 1/2" 2 way splits for the front doors and a decent pair of 6x9's to go in the parcel shelf. Thats if you dont have or arent planning on getting a subwoofer. If you do/are, then just use a set of 5 1/2" splits for rear fill.

IF you cant fit 6 1/2" splits in the factory door pods, then go to your local hardware store and get some 1/2" thick MDF sheets and cut out some nice looking door pods. They'll sound much better when mounted to something solid too.

I do custom installs for friends, and i always recommend philips speakers if youre on a budget. They have nice silk dome tweeters, rubber surrounds for the woofers and have great power handling. They have a nice high sensitivity so work ok off the head unit or a seperate amplifier.

This is going to be coming off the head unit. I can't really lose the 1/2 inch, because that spcae would be coming out of the dead pedal, and my foot would be getting to close to the clutch, and its bad to hit the clutch by accident, and 6 1/2 can't fit up front, I may get a sub somewhere down the line(maybe a year or two)

/me yawns

I am too tired to type anymore. I'm off to bed

Well philips make 5 1/4" splits too. I like the extra oomph of a 6 1/2" driver but if thats all you can fit then they'll work just fine.

As for a sub, IMO JL and Kicker are the best value for money, but soundstream, fusion, earthquake, pioneer, sony etc. all make nice subs....

I used to do that Bilbo, years ago when i first got my licence. Although only in commercial zones and only during the day. And not at insanely loud levels either. I have respect for my eardrums. A stern warning from the police changed my mind though.

Im still a bass junkie, but only when cruising down the highway at a leisurely 110km/h with the windows up.

DO NOT GET SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry for the all caps. sony speakers are not good. Get Pioneer!! sony speakers have a crappy surrond (the part that holds the cone the the mettal) on the speaker. They also do not sound as good. My pioneer 6x8's sound better then sony 6x9s. Sony also makes all around inferior products when compared in price to Pioneer. Example: i had a pioneer (wal-mart) cd player for $140. I wanted a few more features with a new cd player so i got a Sony Cd player for $180 that was actually the $270 model. I wish i would have never switched. About 10 months after i got the cd player it totally stoped working! Luckly it was still under warenty so i got it fixed. But now i am having more problems with the display doent wierd stuff. So anyways DONT GET SONY. Get pioneer or another quality brand. And if u are looking to get some great cheep speakers go to www.justcarspeakers.com

Hope i helped

I thought everyone enjoyed my ground-pounding bass while driving through down town?

I'll go ahead and put in another recommendation for Philips speakers for a low budgest price range. I upgraded first from factory to Philips (with a new hu too however) and i was very pleased with the results.

This is the god's honest truth. A few years back, I was riding through Chicago with a friend of mine, and we came upon a driver such as this (we call them "Ghetto thumpers"). Well, while we were at a stoplight, we turned up our stereo high enough that we couldn't hear his. He turned his bass up in response, and suddenly smoke started pouring out of the trunk of his car! Wiring caught fire!! We laughed our asses off as we sped away.

From my own experience, the best buys list:
  • #1. Jensen - Very inexpensive. A bargain buy with good sound.
  • #2. Philips - You can NEVER go wrong with any Philips product.
  • #3. Pioneer - A tad bit more in price and quality sound.
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
  • #10. Sony - Avoid at all costs.

No, I hate it when people do that. If I am going to play my music loud, I keep the windows up, and my car is pretty good at contaning noise. The only time I would do that would be if I wanted to drown out the guy next to me.

My Dad has a really funny way of dealing with these people. His car has a 440 watt system in it(came that way). when he pulls up next to "Ghetto Thumpers" he breaks out one of his CDs with 70's mucis on it, puts all the windows down, and cranks it up to full power. the look he gets from the guys in the "Ghetto Thumpers" is worth it alone.

I have an Uncle who is a landscaper, and he has a bunch of clients who live near busy intersections. When a white guy drives up with his windows down and the bass turned up, he will pop up from behind a bush and yell "you're white" as loud as he can, and then he ducks back down behind the bushes(He usually does this in Candem, NJ, which is not a very safe place)

Kenwood 6x9 4-ways in the rear

I agree with the others, Philips has got good bang for your buck. So does Pioneer, as far as I can tell. I dunno about Jensen, I avoid them, but mainly because they're just too... cheap... I dunno.
I also agree to ditch Sony, they hike their prices up and it's never worth it. I have too many friends who have Sony horror stories.

Tell you one thing, order them online, don't buy from Best Buy etc. You can get great deals on speakers online. When our 4x6's went out, we got new Blaupunkts at www.cardiscountstereos.com, I think. Fast delivery, came in good condition, all that, and they were the best price we found (for that brand anyway). It's also really easy to compare basic specs on all the speakers; everything is listed in a table, and you can see wattage, 3-way/4-way/2-way/etc., and the price, all in nice little columns.

But definitely do your homework before you buy them, ESPECIALLY if you're on that tight of a budget!

And don't buy Sony.

cheezychops said _exactly_ what i was gonna say. it must be an ohio thing

pio are the shit. sony is shit. http://onlinecarstereo.com has good deals & free shipping to boot. what kind of car is it? chances are, with a bit of work, you can fit in the killer pio 4-way 6x9s.

and no, having subs doesnt neccessarily mean you are a wigger. i caddied for a 50 year old guy that had one put in the other day, and he loved the way his classical music sounded on it.

missyob made me post this.
