New skinner

I have just gotten into the world of skinning, and I think it's awsome

I would like to know, in your opinion, what is the best way to do it? Free hand or specialized program?

If you say program, would you mind pointing me towards a good one?

Welcome new skinner!

The first place to look would be:

Skin Like the Pros FAQ

(Read past the "moderators and whatnot")

Check that out - it might answer some of your questions. If not, come back to this thread and ask away!

Yep,

With no doubt, the best way is by hand, with the help of a graphics program like photoshop, paintshop pro, paint, gimp... Keep your hands off of the skinner.exe programs, but use button extractors and transparency editors if you fancy.

May I advertise my template? check Skinner's Atlas in my sig

Hmmm...

What are the max amounts for my signiture if I put a pic in it? Mine looks like it might break the rules.

Also, I read about putting up an avatar, but it wasn't very specific. Is there a certain amout of posts I need to get an avatar?

Good signatures are up to about 12500 total pixels (with x height)
You can choose an avatar whenever you want, just click on "My Control Panel" at the top of the page, then on "Edit Options" and scroll down, down, down to the goblin town.

Oh, good.

There are funny people here. I find that artistic people tend to be funny, but it seemed that there were all stiffies here.

Virgo - i love your dragon sig - could make an awesome skin

If anyone can find any of the skins I made please email them to Forevever@aol.com
I can't remember all the names but specifically hunting for Lascivious, and DEVOUR (compilation with Jax) and any in the Impulse series which had 6 total. Auriferous, Gilt, Impulse, Nadir, and 2 others I can't remember but you dig.

I agree with Forever. I've actually been meaning to make a dragon skin... It'll probably have lotsa transparencies like my last skin, Blue Bubbles. I think that dragon picture would make a really REALLY cool skin! You should try making one, using that picture!

Yea,

That's the type of skin I would do. Either Dragon (It's my break-dancing name), or a break-dancing type skin. I will probably go with the Dragon though.

Now, I just need help getting started. I read all the articles here.

Now, how tedious is it? Long and hard? or normal pace?

It pretty much depends upon how good of a quality you want the skin. It really REALLY good quality, then it will take a long time. If minimal quality, you can finish it in a day.

I've spent 70+ hours on a skin. Then again i've also completed a skin in under 11 hours. It really depends on the level of detail, whether you choose to do complex animations for the vol/bal/eq etc.

The longest I've spent on a skin is maybe five hours. Though my skins still get a lot of response and make a stir in DeviantArt.

It all depends on the person who is skinning. When I'm skinning, I'm not too picky, but when doing other things, I'm picky.

I would suppose Atmo's a picky skinner, judging he's only finished six out of thirty-some.

It also depends on your skills with the programs you're using... and with graphics in general. If you have some clear ideas and you know how to do it, it won't take too much time. If you're a newbie and don't know what you want to do, it could take forever.

I tend to get sick of working on a skin if its starts looking like something i've already done before.
