win xp modem dumbness

sometimes when i disconnect my 56k, and try to reconnect, it goes through the motions and say its connected, but i get the no page to display error. sometimes it connects fine. any reason for this? any way to fix it? thanks in advance!

try clicking the 'detect connection settings' thing in IE

have you tried looking at more than one page, or refreshing? 9/10 times i log on the popup that my isp sends doesnt load, but im really connected to the net...

ftp's dont work, netscape doesnt either. its like i am connected but cant do anything. disconnecting and redialing doesnt help either, i have to reboot to go on again. its annoying.i checked the 'automatically detect settings' box in the connections tab of the internet options, the closest thing i could find to 'detect connection settings' i dont know, maybe i checkd a box or something i shouldnt have, but it was like this immedeately after a reformat. also, is there any way to wipe all the temporary files and reset all the settings instead of rebooting? i dont think there is, but it would be helpful. thanks!

I had this problem on WinME, and I fixed it by running the internet connection wizard, and filling in the same account details. It reset whatever the problem setting was, and it was OK after that.

Until, that is, I stopped using the network and went back to my modem. I hadn't altered the dialup settings but it wouldn't show pages, just as you describe. That suggests it's something in Network control panel that's causing IE to play up. I even reset IE's web settings, and tried Netscape, but still no joy. Winamp couldn't access the CDDB.

Maybe remove and reinstall Client For Microsoft Networks (or XP's equivalent)?? Shouldn't happen right after a reformat.

Sounds like you need to R&R TCP/IP.
