Unhappy Winamp3 won't open MP3 files with a different filename extension

If I have an MP3 with a filename that doesn't end in .mp3 then winamp3 won't play it. For instance a KaZaA half downloaded MP3 which is a .dat or an AudioGalaxy which is a .temp won't play in Winamp3. If you open them from the Open box or drag them to the playlist, it does nothing. They used to play just fine on Winamp 2 that obviously recognised the files not from the filename but from the headers. Winamp3 must definitely be able to open MP3's with a different file extension.
