Pretty stupid Windows question.

I'm used to using large icons for the start menu (just goes with the whole mickey mouse UI a whole lot better) like so:

Problem is, the programs menu uses small icons, so it looks a bit odd:

I've been trying for ages, but I just can't seem to figure out how to use large icons. I bet there's some kind of a registry hack, or something like that...

While I'm asking questions about Windows UI oddities, how do you detach a tool bar from the taskbar (namely, the quicklaunch tool bar)? I remember easily doing it in win2k, but can't seem to do it in XP (and no, I don't have the taskbar locked).

Large icons: Not sure...never seen it done, may not be possible.

Quick launch: right click the taskbar, go to properties, untic 'show quick launch'

[edit] Read it wrong, just drag it onto the desktop rm' i just tried it and it works fine. [/edit]

Detach quicklaunch.. Drag?
Just drag it where there is no icon on it.

By detach, I mean have it float around on the desktop, not removal.

Not possible, you say? I was afraid of that... maybe I'll go back to using an alternate shell.

edit: I'm an idiot... I was dragging on the wrong part of the quicklaunch bar... the seem to have changed it. You used to be able to click and drag anywhere. Now, you have to click and drag the divider.

What is this ex pee you talk of?
j/k
I don't get what the icon problem is, surely full icon sized icons would look awful on the startmenu? You can right click the taskbar and goto properties and select small startmenu, if that's what you mean, maybe it needs unchecking. Otherwise i'm flumoxed

I got around that there issue by using the classic-style Windows start menu... it's just personal taste, but I find it easier to use that way.

Upgrading to XP took three and a half hours on monday night. It then took a further two hours to remove all the crap I didn't want in the first place - like the double-size start menu. And it annoys me that I can't free up some 25MB+ of disk space by removing the "tour", because windows just cries and demands you put it back.

Oh, and what's Build 2600? Why is this on my desktop?

Build 2600 is the version number of Windows XP. Don't know why it's on your desktop, but download TweakUI to get rid of it (on the General tab). TweakUI is essential anyway, for many reasons.

It's simple, liquidmotion... just undock it, move it at the
top of your screen, and then dock it again.

why there isn't a Windows forum? (i could moderate it)

if you have to struggle for 25mb of disk space, you shouldn't be using XP.

i didn't think many people had to scrounge for free space anymore, what with the large capacity cheap-ass drives these days

Twinsen: how do i undock it?

Or, open up regedit, hit F3, and type "paintdesktop".

It is fun to go inkt HKR and much around with assoiations. A lot quicker and nicer then Folder Options.

Just delete everything you don't think reliable and then reboot.

If you think that it's hard, try to boot your OS again.
