winamp, cash cows and thompson

I am back at the Forums after being away for a little while no doubt none of you missed me, anyhow i bring news from my travels:

Freeware MP3 decoder proggies shall be charged 75cents per copy.
that includes winamp, sonique, musicmatch or anything else that may be freeware and decode mp3's.

so will AOL stuff up the cash for winamp to remain free or will we have to "buy" it.....

<<<will give head for food-stamps>>>

I wouldn't pay. Which doesn't mean I'd stop using it

this is just another plot by The Man to takeover the internet music community.

even those of us who do not download mp3s, but, rather rip them from our own cds for use on our computers will be affected negatively by this turn of events.

stupid ogg, thinks it's so cool when it's not.

sorry to break it to you liquid, but with higher sound quality at lower bitrates, and, on average, lower filesizes for the same quality...vorbis is pretty cool.

i won't be paying or cracking, i'll be using vorbis only version.

Just because I have to pay for a newer version doesn't mean I can't stop using the free and older version.

A very close Japanese friend I knew a while ago once said to me "Watashi no koto wo oboeta, onegai shimasu...Yakusoku?"

I forgot his name though...

i just don't want to have to convert all of my mp3's to ogg format. unless there is some program that will convert them all, keeping filename and directory structure..

I wouldn't pay... I actually own the original CDs of 99% of the music I have in my computer (except a few Yoko Ono tracks that are almost impossible to find in it's original version where I live), and I don't think I should pay to extract them to my computer... besides, there's OGG, and I've already started re-ripping my CDs to that format... better quality, smaller files, free... what else can you ask for?

[edit]oh, it said "decode", not "encode"... :P still, I wouldn't pay[/edit]

No. There will always be free alternatives, legal or not.

I agree. There'll just be newer and better ways for digital music, and the government is too slow to stop the progress.

You can drag and drop .mp3s into CDex and it will convert them to ogg, but directory structure may be a problem, depending on how you have your .mp3s organized. I've never dropped a folder into the prog.

No! Please don't convert your mp3's to ogg. It just lowers the quality..
I would use ogg but encoding takes 4 times longer than mp3. I haven't tried v. 1.0 though. Is it faster??

The requested SIG could not be retrieved

Generally .ogg is a better format than .mp3, but if you convert from .mp3 to .ogg Lapikas is right, you will lose quality.
