Artist of the millenium?

Did anyone watch the video music awards? I never do because most of it is utter crap, but there are always one or two funny things I wish I'd seen.
I keep hearing that Michael Jackson was presented with the "Artist of the Millenium" award, but on the radio this morning I heard that they were just giving him a birthday cake, and as Britney Spears was introducing him she said "to me, he is the artist of the millenium". So Michael Jackson comes out, takes some gold-plated decoration off the top of his birthday cake, and gives a speach about how when he was a boy in Gary, Indiana, he never dreamed he would one day be the artist of the millenium.
So, did anyone see that? If so, what's the deal?

Shit that's pitiful. Why nominate Michael Jackson for that at all? I would say The Beatles would have won it. They are by far the most influential on modern music, prolly even Michael Jackson. Led Zeppelin should have been nominated too. Elvis would have been nominated, but he is not as great as people say. He just started rock and roll, he didn't really do anything else and he was only a star because of being the first to be so outrageous. Now almost everyone in rock has some strange thing going on.

I don't really like MTV or VH1 because now they are too pop/rap centered. They have some RHCP "By The Way" which has gotta be one of the most overplayed songs on the radio, but RHCP is good music. That Jimmy Fallon - Idiot Boyfriend vid is very funny. Britney, nsuck and those idiots are not worth anything except looks, and harder rap (is that what it is?) is too messed up. Eminem, Jay-Z, DMX, those guys...

i don't think anyone of the past 100 years qualifies for artist of the millenia. hell, i don't think artist of the millenia should even be awarded. that's bullshit. millenia is a tag-word dujour and everyone's throwing it around like it's nothing. don't compare things from the last ten or twenty years to the past 1000 years or the next 1000 either. who knows what's coming?
