Direct Sound

What exactly is "direct sound?" My Winamp seems much louder and better sounding when I don't use that setting. Can someone explain it to me, or show me where I can read more about it?

DirectSound is the sound portion of DirectX. It allows some things that standard Wave Out can't do (e.g. surround sound). It's nifty.

I don't have any clue why it would be any quieter. The sound quality (and valume, I would expect) should be the same, regardless.

note: If it sounds quieter, then it will also sound lower-quality. It's proven that if you boost sound by a couple of decibels, people think it sounds louder. WMA codecs use that trick.

somtimes wave and overall volume are both set low so waveout is quieter since direct sound uses only full overall volume. right??

Hmm.. well I guess this is a good time to tell everyone that Peter has updated WA2Update with a newer version of the Directsound and WaveOut plug-in. The newer version is only for version 2.81 .
