without it being backed up........

"Well, got to love you and leave you, need to go get into the shower and rub my hard naked body all over with soapy bubbles, I'll be back later to carry on playing....

It'll take you some time to get over the image of me naked in the shower......mind you don't masturbate to hard thinking about it...."

if you overwrite it, it is usually gone. if you delete it, it usually goes to the recycle bin.

good luck!

what about this.

look in the system recovery disk and find user.exe k

then find out how the systm recovery disk loads

then make a disk with the auto load app and put the user.exe on the disk

then it will put that in and nothin else

reinstalling windows does not effect your programs in any way and its perfectly safe, I'v done it countless of times ,not with the same computer of course, in class.
you can also start your pc in dos and if you know some dos commands, you can move it back.
try this put your win98 cd in,
start your computer in dos, and type this in:

c:\>e: (enter)e being your rom drive

it should now say:
e:\>
then type:
e:\>setup

now you can reinstall windows, and you will have all of your favorite files back.

so this will not remove winamp 3 or adobe or my dial up connection. please say yes.

The only thing I can think of, is taking the 98 boot disk, and log into Dos. When it starts up, you should see something like..

C:\>

or something similair.

You can then, switch it to A:> by typing...

C:\>cd A:\

It should look like

A:\>

You would then preceed to type in....

A:\>dir

You may see something simaliar to...

look around for something that might be user.exe

If you can find it anywhere on the disk, type...

A:\>copy user.exe C:/(Place where it was originally)

It will (Hopefully) say something like....

A:\>copy user.exe C:/
1 file(s) copied

(I recommend copying it to the C:\ drive then moving it to the folder where it was manually)

It -should- logically work.

I hope I was of some help, and I wish you the best.

(But if it doesn't work, the best choice would be to just go out and upgrade, if you don't have a cd rom)

Some other options you can try:

1.See if you can load into safemode. and if you can, you can then undo what ever you done from there.

2.see if you have windows pre-installed.if you do you can reinstall windows from DOS(command prompt)without the win98 cd.

To find out if you have windows pre-installed, from the command prompt type the following:
c:\>cd windows
c:\windows>dir
if you see a dir that reads options and cabs then you have it preinstalled, then you need to do the following:

c:\>cd windows (enter)
type in
c:\windows>options (enter)
type in
c:\windows\options>cabs (enter)
it should now read:
c:\windows\options\cabs>
from there just type in setup

3.know how to use edit.

from the commpand prompt type in:
c:\>edit (enter)
from there look for user.exe cut and paste it in the original location.
