Is death metal leaving the underground?
I've been a death metal (swedish death/melodic metal)fan for a few years now and I think that this genre has been on the up and up. More and more people are figuring out about it and this post will hopefully help. Here are some of my favorite bands, there are also a few shoutcast stations out there that play death metal.
Amon Amarth Children of Bodom Ngalfar Old Man's Child Demons and Wizards There are tons more that I can't think of now. Down with NuMetal! Down with MTV!

That's open to interpretation. They're pretty difficult to define under one genre (classical, jazz, etc.)

Yeah, all types of "death metal" can be broken up into many different sub genres. My favorite type of "death metal" would have to be swedish death metal and melodic death metal. Of course, there are a ton of bands that have a little bit of everything. I don't search them out by genre, I just go to cool websites like burnthesun.com and look at whats cool, then I go to amazon.com to listen to samples. If it passes both rigors, I buy the cd. One band that rocks, but can't really be put into a genre is called "...And Oceans" (thats the actual name, i didn't forget the first part).
we can't forget these classics Iced Earth!!! Iron Maiden!!!

Would you really class Maiden as Death Metal?

Old Man's Child is freaky!!! I prefer Cradle of Filth (I know.. I know... both of these are Black-Metal-Bands!)
Has anyone here ever listened to the band "Mortician". It doesn't get more death-metal than that (take out all the melody and add more noise and add a drum machine, that sounds like a MG)[(Hamylde)] I pace, alone. In a place for the dead Overcome by woe. And here, I've grown So fond of dread that I swear it's heaven [COF] |

At the Gates rocks!!
some say that cradle of filth is going pop? I'll just stay out of that one since I never really liked the band to begin with. Also, anyone seen Henry Rollins on comedy channel? Man did he suck. I lost the little respect that I had for him. |

Have you heard Forest of Shadows? They rule. I think they are more Gothic then death metal though.

While we're talking about genres, would you guys mind classifying these for me?
Tristania The Gathering Dream Theater Type O Negative Carcass In Flames Nevermore ...and tell me, what are the differences between black and death metal? |

kind of off the topic...
I've noticed that more and more people listen to what they call "non mainstream" music, so if more and more are listening to it will non- mainstream become mainstream and current mainstream become non? i myself currently listen to mainstream |

I like metal a lot but I'd not clued up on the whole sub-genre thing. I'm hoping that all these pop-metal bands will either a) encourage the kids to listen to proper metal or b) fuck right off.
I'm a fan of: Slayer Will Haven / Strapping Young Lad Pantera Sepultura Vision of disorder Rammstein .... I bought a Gothic-Industrial metal tribute album to the Smashing Pumpkins the other week, very strange. I think I prefer just my loud guitars and the spiders from Mars. Quote:
