SURVEY: What's your favorite way to buy Digital Music?

Hi!

For anyone to whom I've not introduced myself, despite some 25 odd years home computing experience, I'm only now getting into using my computer to listen to music.

I was hoping that some of you would kindly brag about your favorite places to buy Digital Music. Do I buy single songs or albums (or either/both)? Can you please give me a rough idea of what stuff costs?

I still think the best place to buy digital music is in the local recordstore.

BUY digital music??? You really are new to this...unless you're some sort of spy/market analyst for the record industry...I'm assuming you're not. Nobody (or at least very few people) actually pay money for digital music over the Internet. "Why?" you ask? Because it is quite easy to find the same stuff for free, and when you download the free kind there are no restrictions with respect to format type, the number of times you can play the audio, quality level, etc.. There are lots of programs that you can use to find free digital music (i.e. MP3 files), if you're new to computers then I recommend using Kazaa ( http://www.kazaa.com/en/index.php ), though if you know what you're doing (and I mean REALLY know what you're doing) then nothing is better than IRC for finding what you're interested in ( www.mirc.com ). Snowflake is right...if you want to pay money for your music, then it's probably best to go to a record store (or just buy the actual CD's from somewhere like amazon.com), but if you're looking for some nice free downloads to preview a new band/album (or to just steal the whole damn thing), then check out the above links.

I would never buy digital music. I buy LP records in the form of vinyl, and then download digital copies to listen to in the car, on the computer, etc.

I also download singles if I don't consider an album worth buying, but I might like one or two tracks.

If I do already own them on CD, I use CDex to rip to mp3, as then at least you get consistent volume and quality over all the tracks, as well as them being encoded with a decent encoder.

I buy music from my friends bands on mp3.com. i pay 7 dollars for their digital music instead of 12.95 for their Cd's and I just download their high quailty mp3's and burn em.

For popular music. I dunno. RIAA hates the internet. The defaulto standard for music distrobution is still CD even on the internet (CDNOW and Amazon I frequent)

im pretty sure its illegal becuase your download a different version of the song. different encoders have different quarks. some files are seconds longer or shorter. if you dont have the capability to create 224kbps average variable bit rate mp3's yet you download them and you have the CD its still illegal.

if you delete it after a day its legal for fair use copyright laws.

I don't think that's true - you'd then have to say that copying to audio tape for listening to in the car was illegal, as it would reduce the sound quality of the original record/CD.

I'll have to say CD. The music isn't the only thing... there is the packaging as well. Take U2's "You Can't Leave It All Behind" CD. Besides, I can convert to Ogg/mp3 afterwards.

yeh i can download 80 megabytes of mp3s in the time it takes to rip a single track and my system isn't slow. its just that my connection is phat (mmmm... bandwidth).

You mean "All That You Can't Leave Behind", don't you?

I think the best way is to buy all your stuff on CDs, get it all legally, then put all your music onto the computer. That way, you stay legal, and have all the albums in their original format, but still get the convenience of MP3s when you need them.

Buying digital music isn't worth it, I'd recommend buying CDs and ripping them like I do, or, if getting free stuff from the net doesn't bother you, then use Kazaa, WinMX or one of the programs to get your songs.

yup with a 1024K connection a 5MB file takes about 60seconds to download, ok lets say 90 seconds but thats still 40 5MB songs.

Ok, are you saying downloading songs off of Kazaa is illegal? hahahahaha no. they want you to think it is illegal, but it is not yet. somehow they may find a way to get it illegal. But get it straight people, we are not hurting a damn thing by downloading millions of songs. The record companies are misrepresenting the truth and lying not only to the public but to the government, who blindly assume such a "wise and powerful" orginization of Microsoft-type corporations can't be wrong. Yeah, that's like MS times 5 put in control of our lives on the internet. Sound like a good idea? HELLLL, no!!!!
