skipping

i have winamp version 2.81 on a laptop with a p4m 1.7 and 768mb ram. when i run winamp it skips rather frequently like a cd player with a stratched up disk. i have installed the update and this did not fix the situation. i am inclined to believe this is a windows xp problem as it never happened on my old computer running 2000. any suggestions would be greatly aprreciated. Full system specs (Including Soundcard Info)?
Update your Sound card drivers.
Update DirectX.
