internet and mp3 at the same time
for some time now I have problems running my mp3s parallel to internet audio files.
usually, the winamp player overrides the audio files when surfing. At the moment, the audio files run parallel to the mp3s I am listening to! I can't find the problem in the winamp settings and eben disabling the sound in the browser options (IE) doesn't help. can someone please help me? |

This is actually an improvement over older systems, not a glitch. Older soundcards could only support one audio channel at a time, and therefore would only play sounds generated by the 'active' application. Newer soundcards have multi-channel support, and can play sounds generated by all applications simultaneously, which is what is happening in your case.
By the way, this didn't happen on its own, you had to have installed a new soundcard and/or soundcard drivers. this post has a few suggestions which you may wish to try, but ultimately you may not be able to disable this feature. Like my photography? Buy some here.... |

thanks ethan_h!
but this problem DID show up without a hardware change. same notebook... same hardware ..... same everything! Granted..... after instaling a new version of Norton, my system was shot and is running rather bumpy lately. (thinking about format C a lot recently!) something in the confic may be totally screwed up! And although this seems to be a good feature.... I´d rather be able to turn it off! Maybe I SHOULD do a format C!!!!!!

More system specs required . . .
esp. soundcard (or sound chip, if it's onboard, as in most notebooks/laptops) Windows OS ? Internet Explorer version? Winamp version? Which Output plugin is currently active? (DirectSound or WaveOut, or some 3rd-party plugin)? Is Windows Update enabled? Are you sure it didn't (secretly) install an updated driver for the sound card/chip? If so, then the only way you're going to fix this is to reinstall the original old driver... unless your sound device has a configuration utility/setting to only enable one audio stream at once, instead of multiple . . . |

Hm... system specs.....I am more a user than a computer specialist.
anyway, OS is '98, soundcard on board and controlled by ESS Allegro (WDM) or something, IE: 5.50, Winamp Version: 2.81! As far es I can tell, I did not load anything secretly from the internet. (Firewall setting set on high, and downloads are also monitored! Downloads promted for okay! And I am not much of a surfer!) Windows update is off! |

Okay, so what type of "internet audio files" are we talking about here?
Are they background music files which play automatically when the page opens? And if so, are they MIDI files? Or are they some other format, eg. Shockwave Flash ? If they're MIDI files, then try muting MIDI volume in Windows Mixer. I assume you've already been to: Internet Explorer -> Tools menu -> Options -> Advanced tab and unchecked "Play sounds" (under "multimedia" section) ? Does your soundchip have its own Control Panel, or any kind of config utility? If so, maybe there's an option in there to only allow playback of 1 audio stream instead of multiple simultaneous streams ?!?! |
