winampa.exe
I just installed the newest version of WinAmp, "Classic 2.81". Now everytime I boot up my computer and log in (Win NT, 4.0, SP6a), I get a message that winampa.exe cannot be found. All I have to do is hit the ok button, but this is really annoying. I have re-installed, but this has not helped.
Any suggestions on how to solve this probelm would be greatly appreciated. Thanks The Fabricator |

Winampa.exe is the winamp agent software (that maintains the file associations. Did you delete it or elect not to install it? If so a full install of Winamp should cure it.

First of all, did you previously install Winamp3 and then uninstall it (before you installed Winamp 2.81) ?
If yes, then use MSCONFIG (start -> run -> msconfig) Goto the Startup tab Uncheck: winampa.exe (WinampAgent) If you've never installed WA3, then open WA2.81 goto: Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Setup -> Agent Uncheck all 3 options. However, seeing the Winamp Agent is now an optional choice in the Winamp 2.81 installer (unchecked by default), there's a likely probability that it's not even installed and that there's no Agent entry in the prefs (this is how it is with my 2.81 installation anyway). So, more than likely, I reckon it's something to do with Winamp3 uninstallation (yet another bug/flaw in the uninstaller), and you'll need to remove the entry via MSCONFIG. I just hope that MSCONFIG exists in WinNT4 . . . if not, then you can install Mike Lin's StartUp Control Panel and remove the winampa.exe entry from there (via: "HKLM / Run" tab) The only other way is to manually edit the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Right click "WinampAgent" entry in the right pane -> delete. imho, it's fairly non-sensical to give the Winamp3 Agent the same filename as the Winamp 2x Agent . . . never mind the bug in the uninstaller. |
