Okay, can you provide us with more information, yes? First off,, you say that "all of your other sound files work" - does that include other mp3s that you have 'obtained' from other sources??? And when you play your ripped mp3s, do you see any activity in the visualisation window (the spectrum that appear under the counter in the main window)??

What CD Ripper are you using? CDex??? Exact Audio Copy??

Using the LAME encoder with CDex
The lame390_enc.dll file is simply placed in the CDex directory, by default located in c:\program files\cdex130 (folder name may vary depending on the version of CDex you are using), but as far as I know, the LAME encoder comes as default with versions of CDex greater than 1.30, so you shouldn't have to take this step. Then go to options -> settings, click on the 'Encoder' tab, and select the LAME encoder from the list. Other settings, such as bitrate, are also defined here.

Using the LAME encoder with Exact Audio Copy
I'd suggest for getting started quicker to use the DLL version. You wind up with an extra tab in Compression options that will make selecting options more straightforward.

Extract either the DLL or EXE (or even both) into the EAC program directory. Start EAC and in the compression options, select the LAME encoder from the drop-down box. For the DLL, this is done on the Waveform tab. For the EXE, place a check in 'Use external program for compression,' and for 'Parameter passing scheme,' select 'LAME MP3 Encoder.'

For the EXE, you will also need to select the proper path to it (C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\LAME.EXE)

In the bit rate drop-down box, select 192 kBit/s.

You will need to add this to the 'Additional command line options:

-m j (for joint-stereo)
-m s (for full stereo)

192 kbps is about the point where you may not want to use -m j, but it may still sound better in some cases. Encode a few files both ways and let your ears decide.

Be sure to check 'Add ID3 Tag' and 'Delete WAV file after compression.'

If you use the DLL, there will be another tab added to the compression options with a few drop-down boxes that will make these (and other important quality-related) selections easier to figure out. Just remember to check 'Do not add WAV header to file' and enter '.mp3' in the 'File extension for headerless files' box on the Waveform tab.

If you go exploring in EAC or CDex, there will be other options for naming the resultant files and for adding ID3 tags. These options are pretty straightforward as well.

Thats about as much as I can help you for now, given the information that you have provided. Hope it is of some help.

ummm....

Ethan... on here is more information. ALL my other MP#'s work. NONE of the ripped files work at all. There is activity and countdown in the visualization window. Everythung works other than sound. It seems to be with ANY ripping program that I have used. It either dosent play or it is only seconds long after converting. I dont know what program there is that is freeware or shareware that will work. So any suggestions will help. I am going to try to get my computer connected to the internet and download winamp 3 but I would like to solve this problem before i create more for myself.

THanks
Heather

CDEX and EAC are both freeware and also happen to be the best two rippers in existence. ethan has given accurate info about how to set up the encoder with both programs; if your ripped files don't produce any sound, it obviously means you're doing something wrong during the encoding process.

can you send me a copy or provide a link to those mp3s? One that plays for you, and one that you have ripped and doesn't play?
