Unable to load Skins for Winamp 2.8

I have been trying to download skins for Winamp 2.8 The files are .wal files and should automatically load but they are not doing this. I have tried to save the files to my hard drive but that is not working either. I have windows XP and this is the first time I have had problems downloading skins. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help in this matter.
