WINAMP v.3- (lack of) sound quality
"upgrading" to WINAMP v3 (from v2.xx) resulted in serious degredation of sound quality. For all of the bells and whistles that are included in this latest version, the team at Nullsoft seems to have lost focus. The sound quality is plain awful, and there appears not be an easy fix- at least not within the application itself (possibly a 3rd party codec?, but I'm done with this garbage). I will spend no more of my time trying to fix this. ...WINAMP 3 - Great aspirations in a sloppy, unfinished package. Enjoy...

It's a problem with your sound card drivers:
1) Upgrade your drivers to the latest version. 2) If the problem persists, download the Winamp3 plugin update at http://www.blorp.com/~peter/wa3/wa3update.exe. 3) If this still doesn't work, disable DirectSound by unchecking the Preferences->Audio->Enable DirectSound Output checkbox. If you're running a Creative card, you may want to try the kX drivers (www.kxproject.com), which tend to work better than Creative's own (wouldn't take much), and see this thread. It's not a problem with the friggin drivers! It's a problem with WA3 being a resource hog.

The sound quality problems are due to outdated sound drivers.
