winamp but no sound

i have just bought a lap top runniing on windows xp, downloaded winamp 3, added my favourite radio station to it but although i can see that it is playing i cannot hear it - only "hiss". also winamp will not play cd's even thogh i clicked all the right buttons at installation time, but they automatically play when put in the player using the windows media player. how can i get winamp to over ride the player pre loaded?

Try enabling (or disabling if it is turned on)directsound (prefs/audio/directsound). Does it play mp3`s?

in Mediaplayer disable associate with audio cd`s, in WA3 be sure it is enabled.
Or, turn on autoplay for cd`s and when player is asked for, select wa3 and `always use ...`
