What gives with WinAmp3?
Had WinAmp 3 running fine on my W2K sytem , but recently had to do clean install - have finally gotten around to reinstalling the latest version of WinAmp, and everything has gone to hell.
System: W2K SP3 AMD 1.33 GHz Athlon ASUS A7M266 mb 512 DDR PC2100 RAM Terratec EWX 24/96 sound card Hercules GF3 video card (42.01 drivers) DirectX 9 Everything (including mb) has latest drivers, and all apps are updated. Symptoms: 1) Attempting to switch skins will usually produce "Studio.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows" - program crashes 2) Attempting to click on any of the radio stations on WinAmp site brings up a file download window for a shoutcast file. Downloading the file and attempting to open it in WinAmp crashes the program. Opening in the present location also crashes WinAmp. Until now, I have been using WinAmp 3 as a plug-in-play app withou any prroblems. All file types are associated with WinAmp. I'm not sure what the issue is with Shoutcast, but have used internet radio with WinAmp 3 without any problems, before clean install. I apologize if this has been answered before, but a search of the forums brings up all sorts of arcane router config problems (I have an ADSL connection with an Alcatel router.) As I had no problems in the past, I don't think the problem concerns the router. Finally WinAmp has ZoneAlarm connect permission. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. |

I'm sure I must be making an extremely basic error.
I uninstalled WinAmp 3 and installed WinAmp 2, but I still am unable to listen to internet radio broadcasts choosen from WinAmp's website. Before problems started, clicking on any of the available stations would lead WinAmp to automatically play the station. Now, with version 2 or 3, clicking on any station brings up a standard W2K download window for a shoutcast-playlist.pls file. Attempting to open the file in WinAmp 3 led to a crash; in WinAmp 2 I get a message that Studio.exe is needed but it not present in the system (WinAmp 2 did not install it.) Somone care to enlighten me on this? |

1. Goto: Winamp 2x -> Prefs (Ctrl+P) -> Filetypes
2. Click "select none button" 3. Checkmark "register files on Winamp start" 4. Close Prefs -> exit WA2 5. Reopen WA2, go back to Prefs -> Filetypes 6. Select the extensions you want to be associated here PLS, M3U, MP3 = recommended, plus any others of your choice 7. Repeat 4 8. Close & Restart WA2 If the problems with "can't find studio.exe" persist, goto: Windows Folder Options -> File Types tab Scroll down for & hi-lite PLS Click "Advanced" Hi-lite "Play in Winamp" Click "Edit" Make sure the app used command line is: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINAMP\WINAMP.EXE" "%1" (all 4 "quotation marks" included, and if you installed wa2 elsewhere, make sure the path is correct) Click "Okay" Back in original "Advanced" section, hi-lite "Play in Winamp" again Click "Set Default" If the problems with Open Files Dialog persists: Start -> Run -> Regedit If the following keys/strings don't already exist, you will need to create them: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type audio/scpls : Extension = .pls audio/x-scpls : Extension = .pls Basically, the "audio/scpls" is a new key in the left pane and Name: "Extension" / Data: ".pls" is a new string in the right pane. Left pane: Hi-lite "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type" Edit -> New -> Key Type the key name as audio/scpls HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\audio/scpls Edit -> New -> String String name = Extension Right pane: Hi-lite "Extension" string Edit -> Modify Type in: .pls Repeat for audio/x-scpls Hope you understand all this . . . loud & clear If you need further help, or aren't familiar with editing the registry, please come back here for further assistance. One slight error could screw everything. Now, as for WA3 . . .

Thank you for the very thorough and timely reply. You solution was just what was needed. I should have realized that it was a filetype association problem.
It was not necessary to run Regedit; step 1: re-associating PLS filetypes within WA2 preferences, and then step 2: assigning PLS filetypes to WA in W2K Folder Options solved the problem. Thanks again |
