Newbie to Shoutcast Type Question
1) Very soon we're moving our broadcast server to a service down in Texas. This server is going to have fibre.. as in amazing bandwidth.
We, however are still doing the show from Ontario Canada. I just want to be perfectly clear. If we broadcast from here sending our stream to the shoutcast server in Texas, does that mean that the shoutcast server acts as one listener to our stream and then it takes the burden for everyone else trying to connect? -- kinda like a live365 stream??? 2) Is there a way for us to save our broadcast. Just ours, as it is happing like media encoder allows? And at what point is the save occuring? Would it be from our source or from the server end? 3) We were told that if we broadcast at more than 22kbps mono we would be killing 56k modem users. Yes? No? Told ya we're newbies!

1.
The Winamp/DSP combo (source) will use upload bandwidth. The DNAS (server) will use download bandwidth to accept the stream and upload bandwidth to server listeners. Summary: The DNAS is sourced using download bandwidth. The DNAS supports listeners using upload bandwidth. The Winamp/DSP combo sources the DNAS using upload bandwidth. 2. Both the 1.8.0 version of the DSP and the Oddcast DSP allow you to save your stream. For the 1.8.0 version of the DSP, check out the Sticky post titled: SHOUTcast: Important Info & Answers to FAQs. READ ME! Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled: General SHOUTcast Information -> Where can I download the old version of SHOUTcast DSP? 3. 56k modem listeners can listen up to 32kbps mono depending on their connection. You're probably safe with 24kbps mono. I run a 32kbps mono and some modem listeners say they can listen, some say they can listen but doing anything else with their connection makes them buffer, and some say they cannot listen without constant buffering. Remember, you can run multiple bitrates of the same stream. Check out the Sticky post titled: SHOUTcast: Important Info & Answers to FAQs. READ ME! Scroll down a bit and look for the section titled: How to Setup a Live Audio Stream -> Multi-bitrate Streams Just make sure the DNASs have enough bandwidth. |
