the hammers were a sendup of the ussr's old national symbol, the sickle and the hammer. also, they had a bit of a nazi influence in them as well, with the way that they marched, etc.

basically, the hammers and the way pink's fans acted was a sort of commentary about the power that rock stars sometimes yield and the fanatacism with which their fans often follow them. that and it looked badass

Smashing things.

Opressive governments.

In regard to the symbolism of the worms, Waters describes the hammer as “a symbol of the forces of oppression” and the worms as “the thinking part” (Vance). In other words, the crossed-hammers represent the actions that an oppressive person might take while the worms signify the mental deterioration that would induce such actions.

I think he meant for all of his fans to get up and start marching to the nearest hardware store to buy hammers and nails.

I really liked the movie (I love the album too)...I first saw parts of it when I was a little child and the hammers scared me to death. Since it was already explained very well, I got naother question related to it:

Did anyone of you ever notice that they used the same greeting (crossing fists over your head) in "The Wall" and "1984" (the movie)? I didn't remember reading it in the book 1984. The movie is from 1984 (what a coincidence) so does anyone of you know what came first? The greeeting in the book or on the Pink FLoyd movie or from somewhere else?

Mia
