ATi graphics card + windowed mode...

Obviously, this belongs on the troubleshooting forum, but you guys might not check that for days =]

Bowing in to peer pressure, I recently spent a great wad of my hard-earned cash on a new machine, including an ATi Radeon 9700.

It's glorious.

I can play milkdrop in fullscreen and in overlay mode just fine, but as soon as I use windowed mode (which I prefer), the frame frate drops horribly. I'm talking under 10fps with a really small window. Drag the window to cover most of the 1024x768 desktop, and I get about 1fps.

Do any of you run an ATi card (9700 or otherwise)? I can't imagine why only windowed mode would be slow (whereas it was the fastest on my old GF2). I'm running the latest Catalyst drivers from ATi, if that makes a difference.

oops, thought I was editing, not quoting...

meant to say that even turning everything down doesn't increase the speed at all...

Krash, congrats on the new machine. I love mine too. I have the ATI 9700 with the newest 3.1 catalyst drivers and Directx 9. Basically I keep this machine updated all the time. I only keep what I need in my services running which presently is 12 and nothing in my startup, I start everything manually. I also put the ati hotkey poller to manual in services. I hardly ever run window mode, fullscreen is what i prefer but I went to window mode and it is pegged out at 64 fps, that is the fastest I seem to ever get in any mode. I have been trying to find a problem with MD and I have yet to fine one except that when I hit M once in a while half the code is missing in the per frame but the preset is still runing with all the code and if I shut down and start MD again it is all there. Also I run my desktop most the time at 1152 x 864 and MD at 1280 x 960 and a very few presets drop below 64fps usually in the high 50's fps. I do not think I can be of any help to you because MD screams on this machine with no problems but if you have any questions for me to help you find the bug just ask. By the way what processor did you get? Also sorry about that last post, I guess you can't post a preset with a (') in the zip name or it comes out as a attachment. But I figured it out half drunk last night. Luckily I am off work today. I know you will figure it out. SM

Specs of the new beast:

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ with 333MHz FSB
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard (nForce2 chipset)
1 GB PC2700 (333MHz) memory
40GB hard drive to boot from
120GB SATA hard drive
Radeon 9700

I think I'm gonna reinstall my video drivers - might work better.

SM & Krash - I hate both of you and your awesome machines. Do you really need more than a gigabyte of RAM?

I managed to pickup a Voodoo3 PCI for A$30, which runs MD quite quickly (35 - 40 fps+), but unfortunately maxes out at a texture size of 256 x 256, meaning it looks pretty awful, even at very high resolutions. As far as I know, there's not any way around this, which is a bit of shame.....

For the record, both my onboard Intel video card and the Voodoo3 seem to run slightly quicker in windowed mode than they do in fullscreen mode with the same resolution... not that that would be any help towards solving your problem though

BTW, SM & Krash, what size monitor are you using? Do either of you have LCD screens, or do you still have CRTs? You can get 19" CRTs for as low as A$320 these days, I paid A$500 for mine just under a year ago... oh well...

17" at the moment. I'll get something bigger when I have more money - I have much less than I did a week ago.

I also fixed my problem - DirectX had gotten screwy in the process of putting the new vid card in (I had to run off my old GF2 for a couple days, 'cause nobody had 9700's in stock). Reinstalled DirectX, and now it's up to 60fps or so. I wish I knew how I used to get 90...

Yes Krash, if you can tell me how to get better than 64fps I would love MD even more. SM

1.8 ghz P4 512 cache
GE4 TI 4400
(MultiMon Primary)
32 meg ATI all in wonder PCI
(MultiMon Secondary)
1.2 gigs SDR 133
60gig HD

(Not to mention ThermalTake CPU Cooler, Quad-Blue LED 80mm Cooling Fan)

No "beast" but formidable enough to impress friends and scare enemies.

I get 50-60 fps fullscreen or windowed... doesn't really matter. I just can't run desktop or fade to black.
