And does this happen in all players?
(eg. Windows Media Player)

This problem usually effects onboard sound chips (especially under Win2k).
The usual solution is to reinstall or update sound drivers

ive found that if you disable/enable direct sound, it should stop. its somewhere in the preferences. then you should update the sound drivers and youll be all set.

Where have you looked?
What is your Windows OS?
What is the make/model of the computer?
What is the make/model of the motherboard?

Drivers are usually obtainable directly from the pc or motherboard manufacturer.

What Windows reports to be the chip/driver (in Device Manager) may not necessarily be correct, especially if it automatically installed the nearest driver it could find.
