id tag 1 wanted instead id tag 2

Hello!

Can I tell winamp to use only id tag 1?
How to avoid displaying ID tag 2 while there is more correct id tag 1 present??? It's the I case with my collection of mp3's with correct ID tag 1. Still there is sometimes illegal id 2 tags present ...

I use id tag 1 as standard, mostly because it's more quick to rename mp3s with tag in the beginning of file and also it's 99% enough.
I like music and need only essential information there and id tag 1 seems to be sufficent.

The only way you can get what you want is to either REMOVE or UNcheck all ID3v2 tags from your songs and leave only the ID3v1 tags in place. You must either eliminate them entirely, or have both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags contain the same info. If you have many files to edit in this way, my suggestion is to use Mp3 Tag Tools because that program can also copy and synchronize ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags.

ID3v2 tags always take precedence over ID3v1 tags. That's the way it works in the world of MP3's. Winamp3 is performing the CORRECT procedure if you have both tags and it only displays the ID3v2 info. But it's the ID3v2 tag that is needed/recognized in the world of MP3's, especially if you want to use components like LyricsAmp [Component ID: 121295], where that component will search for/discover Song Lyrics at online servers, but will find NOTHING without correct ID3v2 non-audio tag info attached to the MP3 file. Read more about ID3v2 tags HERE.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

idiot24-7 ... yes. same in Winamp3. But after I posted what I did above, let's let musha decide whether or not to keep ID3v2 tags in place.

Is there a utility that will copy over v1 to v2 (within the file) on a large scale? Doing that by hand is daunting.

Hello!
Thanks for your kind explanation.
IMO mp3 ID tag 1 has it's good side too, therefore I decided (after considering cons and pros) to choose ID tag 1.
ID tag 1 is sufficent for a music and a mp3 collectioning ... when I need pictures or lyrics then I take a dvd or something ...
If one has an huge collection of mp3s then editing id tag 2 takes 50x as much time to edit id tag 1.
When id tag 1 is edited it's only made cahnges to the header of the file and there is no need to rewrite whole mp3 file to the end as is matter with id tag 2.
Also ID tag 1 is much better described and therefore there is less hazzle with it. I don't think that mp3 must be kind of a multimedia encyclopedia or whatever.
After organizing my whole collection with id tag 1 standard I found that there were still some albums which failed to display proper names ... and the reason was winamp preferring id tag 2....
Who ever is the author of winamp, it might be a good idea to add otion to prefer id tag 1 or 2.

Rewriting big collection of mp3's just because id tag 2 isn't reasonable i guess when there is already proper tag 1 present.
That was my opinion.

OR, you could get a MP3 tagging utility and update your tags for your Collection. I have around 7000+ mp3's and used Tag&Rename in about 30 minutes it copied v1 tag info to v2 tag .... Now the whole collection has both tags.

ssitruc mentioned collection isn't a huge collection of mp3s which can be retagged in a 30 minutes ... from 7000+ it's a long way to the huge collection ...
Also I have all these mp3s on a DVDR disks which can't be re-edited.
I'm still convinced that ID tag 1 is enough in several occasions and serious mp3 players should support it properly.
PS. In my early post I stated mistakenly that ID 1 tag is in the header of the mp3 file ... actually it's in the end of files.
Still re-editing massive amount ID 1 tag takes much less time, when compared to ID tag 2.
